NEWS RELEASE: JTA Academic Team Wins District Championship for Second Year in a Row

JTA Academic Team District Champions

This past weekend the Alton Academic team traveled to North Middle School for the District Governor's Cup Competition. In Coach Brandon Durbin’s second year at the helm, and for the second year in a row, they walked away carrying hardware bound for the Region Competition.

“I’m proud of the effort these kids put into this team, and how hard they work to make sure we stayed at the top,” said Coach Brandon Durbin, “This is my second year with the program, and it’s all thanks to the group of kids that I have, I came into this with a pretty talented group.”

This year’s District Championship marks the second year in a row that the Trojans have controlled the district level of competition. The last time the Trojans had back-to-back District Championships was in 2010/2011. They will be headed to the Region Competition at West Hardin on February 1st.

7th Grader Austin Elms, who placed first in the Social Studies category for the team, said that “We want to be competitive, we have that drive as a team, and we’re hoping to do well at Region this year. A little over a third of our team is 8th Graders, so we want to do well for them, and moving forward into next year.”

The Alton Academic Team has a long history of being successful on the local and state levels, winning a State Championship in 1989. Since the millennium mark, they have collected five district titles, and are looking to add their first Region Championship in twenty-five years. The team has amassed twelve district championships, six region championships, and one state title in their thirty-three-year history.

8th Grader Alyssa Cotrell, who placed 4th in Science, said that “I like where we’re at as a team, headed in Regions. We have a pretty good shot this year, and I’m glad that we’ve brought the team back to being competitive. We want to win, and I think that’s the difference.”
