Gabe Russell, State Champion

On Saturday, May 25th, JTA 8th Grader Gabe Russell joined an elite group of people in the Commonwealth, he became a State Champion. While running in the Middle School Track and Field State Championships at the University of Louisville, Russell set a Personal Record and secured the top spot in the 3200 Meter with a time of 10:33.88.

Russell is not new to setting records, in fact it's becoming old hat to this Trojan  up-and-comer. As a 7th Grader, he set the North Hardin School record for the 3K with a time of 10:40, a record he beat in this year’s State Championship. Earlier today, Russell was presented with his KTCCCA State Championship Trophy and Ring at J. T. Alton Middle School by Principal Kevin Estes and Athletic Director Richard Rowland. An Athletic Departmental Letter of Commendation was also issued to Russell for his achievements, who was earlier this year named the inaugural JTA 8th Grade Male Student Athlete of the Year after having been recognized as the April Student Athlete of the Month.

AD Rowland said that “He (Russell) takes his effort and what he pours into this sport very seriously, and has a very bright future in running. He is truly a role model for the students in our building, and will continue to be at North Hardin.”

Not only is Russell a standout athlete on the Cross Country and Track and Field Teams for North Hardin, he is a role model student for JTA. For three years he has maintained his status on the All “A” Honor Roll, and has been the recipient of the school’s Trojan Award, the highest award an Alton Student can recieve, for all three years of his attendance. In January of this year, Gabe was featured as a News Enterprise Tuesday’s Teen for his accomplishments both as an Athlete and as a leader in the building.

His math teacher of two years Mrs. Jaime Chaney said that “Gabe is an incredible student who has such an impressive work ethic and a strong motivation to grow in  mathematics. His personality is one that will put a smile on your face and change the whole dynamic of your classroom. Gabe is truly an awesome student and will definitely be missed here at JTA next year.”
