Sandra Roopchan, a 5th grade social studies and writing teacher at New Highland Elementary School, has earned the 2020 Hardin County Schools WHAS-11 ExCEL Award presented by LG&E KU.

Ms. Roopchan learned about her award this morning after going through a rigorous process.  She will be honored at a celebration on February 26, 2020 at New Highland Elementary School.  WHAS-11 reporter and anchor Hayley Minogue and a representative from LG&E KU will be there to present the ExCEL Award and a $1000 check from LG&E KU.  The money will purchase items for Ms. Roopchan’s classroom.

“Ms. Roopchan is a vital member of our school family,” New Highland Elementary School Principal Chalis Packer said.  “She always puts students first and gives so much of herself to her students in and out of the classroom.  She is always smiling and her heart is full of so much joy.  Ms. Roopchan is an excellent teacher, leader, servant, team player and mentor.  We are so grateful that she is at New Highland.”

“I am in shock,” Ms. Roopchan said. “I am honored to receive this extremely prestigious award.  I’m also thankful for the support of my students, teaching team, administration and the rest of the New Highland family. ‘Thank you’ does not seem adequate enough to express my gratitude.”

Ms. Roopchan came to New Highland Elementary in 2017 after spending 15 years with Ohio County (Kentucky) Schools.

“Ms. Roopchan is an exemplary teacher and her hard work represents the selfless dedication that takes place across Hardin County Schools,” HCS Superintendent Teresa Morgan said.  “She truly is student-centered and gives her students the highest quality instruction possible.  Every day is a great day in her classroom.  History comes to life and her students have fun learning.”

“The ExCEL Award may just go to one teacher,” Mrs. Morgan added.  “However, it embodies the spirit of hard work, enthusiasm and dedication that every member of the HCS family has.”

Ms. Roopchan is the first New Highland Elementary School teacher in the history of the HCS WHAS-11 ExCEL Award.
