MODIFICATIONS TO SECOND COVID-19 VACCINATION SCHEDULE - AFFECTS STUDENT INSTRUCTION

When Hardin County Schools published the dates for staff COVID-19 vaccine distribution in January, the district shared that “parents need to take note that a similar and - even possibly longer process - will be used when HCS staff receives the second round of the vaccine on March 4, 5, 8, and 9, 2021.”

The second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine will be administered on March 4, 5, 8, and 9 to all of those who received the first dose of the vaccine on the same dates in February.  No one will receive a first dose on the March dates through the HCS distribution.

Students who normally receive in-person instruction on those days or are part of the HCS Online Academy (OLA) will receive non-traditional instruction on the day their school staff is to receive the vaccine.  Also, elementary and middle school students will have a second NTI day because of the vaccination.

OLA teachers will communicate with their students and their parents.

No Google Meets for any student will be held on the day their school staff receives the second dose of the vaccine.  Students will complete independent work that day.  That work will be given to them in preparation for that day through Google Classroom, packet work, etc.  If a school is on NTI for a second day (elementary and middle schools), that school will communicate its plan for the second day with parents and students.

“The addition of a second day is truly a precautionary step,” HCS Superintendent Teresa Morgan said.  “Other organizations who have administered the second dose of the vaccine have noted that some have experienced various side effects that could last 24 hours.  While the likelihood of those side effects is extremely low, we simply cannot supply substitute teachers because they are also receiving the vaccine.“

Therefore, parents need to pay particularly close attention to the following schedule:

All high school juniors (11th graders) will be released from their high school on March 9 at approximately 1:15 pm.

“We have been asked why we couldn’t vaccinate staff members in the same feeder patterns on the same day,” Mrs. Morgan said.  “Our vaccinator is able to supply us with 450 vaccines per day during these four days and the staff to properly distribute the vaccine.  If we sorted by feeder patterns, then the number seeking a vaccination would exceed 450 on a given day.

“We know that this is not convenient and may cause obstacles.  In the long run, this will be the best opportunity to get back to a more normal school experience.  Our students, staff, and parents continue to exhibit patience, kindness, and compassion.  That makes the process of overcoming the difficulties COVID-19 presents so much easier.  We continue to emphasize that these vaccinations are a very big step in helping us return to normalcy.”
