      My name is Josh Johnson.  I will be your son or daughter's physical educator this year.  I would like to briefly describe the physical education program at G.C. Burkhead and what your child can expect to learn over the next few years.  Let me begin, however, by briefly describing my professional background.

     My Bachelor Degree is in Physical Education from Western Kentucky University.  The core courses for this degree included work in English, history, math and science.  General education courses for this degree included work in educational psychology, child development, and educational philosophy.  The specialized courses included work in understanding children's physical development and how they learn motor skills, scientific aspects of physical fitness and sports, as well as effective teaching techniques and progressions for a variety of lifetime sports and fitness activities.

     I also have an English minor that included courses in writing and literature with an emphasis in religious studies.  In addition to my undergraduate coursework, I also played intramural football and basketball and I represented WKU in the collegiate Judo Championships.  Today, I continue to remain active in teaching Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, riding mountain bikes, and participating in various fitness activities.  

In 2007 I completed a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science through Western Kentucky University.  This pursuit was very demanding but also very rewarding.  Advanced Exercise Physiology, Advanced Exercise Prescription, Critical Analysis of Professional Literature, Biomechanics, and Motor Development were some of the courses I successfully navigated.  To obtain this degree I had to complete a 6 hour comprehensive written exam and a 2 hour oral examination with 3 of my Professors!

     As a result of WKU's rigorous program, attending one or more professional conferences each year, staying current with professional literature, and my previous teaching experience, I have designed a program for children that helps them develop the physical competencies that lead to confidence and participation in physical activity for a lifetime.  My goal is to help children find a variety of ways enjoy being physically active so that they will be able to get all of the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social benefits that come to someone who is physically active throughout his or her life.  

     At G.C.B., your child will have physical education once a week for 45 minutes each period.  The program has been designed to focus on three major areas that contribute to one's physical health and well-being.  

  • Movement Concepts.  Movement concepts help children understand how to move.  In early grades, for example, the program emphasizes the variety of ways we travel using locomotor skills (e.g. running, skipping, hopping).  Children practice skills that emphasize movement concepts, such as changes of directions, pathways, and speeds.  Fundamental gymnastics are also a part of early learning.  
  • Skill Themes.  Basic motor and manipulative skills such as throwing, kicking, volleying, and striking with a racket are taught in the primary grades.  In the upper grades the children are taught how to use these fundamental skills in competitive and non-competitive activities such as games and sports, gymnastics, and various forms of rhythmical movement. 
  • Wellness Concepts.  Wellness concepts are taught throughout the program.  They include, for example, corrective posture, body systems, nutrition concepts, coping skills, and various ways to health-related fitness.  

     As a teacher I recognize that children are at different developmental levels with a variety of needs and interests.  For this reason, I attempted to provide all our children with learning experiences that are both beneficial and enjoyable.  Each lesson is also adjusted to take into account the wide range of skill and fitness levels that characterizes children of this age.  

     In closing I want to invite you to observe your child in his or her physical education class at any time during the year.  If you have the opportunity to visit, you will quickly see that your child's physical education classes are very different from the "old" "gym" classes where the teacher "rolls the ball out" and hopes the students are "busy, happy, and good."

     I am very proud of the physical education program at G.C. Burkhead, and I look forward to being your child's physical educator this year.
