Matthew Baucum is originally from Paducah, Kentucky. He holds a Master of Arts degree in trombone performance from the University of Iowa and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Murray State University. Mr. Baucum is currently in his 20th year teaching band and 14th year as Director of Bands at East Hardin Middle School in Glendale, Kentucky. He also serves as an assistant band director at Central Hardin High School where he assists with the marching band and directs the trombone ensemble.
At East Hardin, Mr. Baucum conducts the 6th-8th grade bands, where approximately 30% of the student population is enrolled in the program. East Hardin Bands have consistently received distinguished ratings at Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) Large Ensemble Assessments. In addition, East Hardin Band students consistently place well at all-district band auditions and have had great success at solo & ensemble festivals, receiving numerous distinguished ratings.
Mr. Baucum is a member the Kentucky Music Educators Association and has served as Fourth District Band Chair, Fourth District President, Fourth District Jazz Chair and has been named the KMEA Fourth District Middle School Teacher of the year in 2018, 2015 and 2010. In addition, he has served as a guest conductor for numerous Honor Bands and has presented numerous trombone master classes and clinics, most recently for the 2017 KMEA Professional Development Conference where he co-presented on the topic of "Trombone Tips, Tricks and Techniques for the Band Room."
Before his appointment to East Hardin Middle School, Mr. Baucum was the Director of Bands at LaRue County Middle School in Hodgenville, Kentucky and at Reidland High School in Paducah, Kentucky. He lives in Upton, Ky. with his wife Kelly, children Huston and Lillian and two cats Darcy and Jake.
