Upton Pioneer Spirit Citizenship Awards

When the Upton Family from Alabama and Georgia visited our community during Upton Days, they contributed a gift to our school in memory of their pioneer Kentucky ancestors who founded Upton. That gift has become the Upton Pioneer Spirit Award. A trophy and a $50.00 savings bond are awarded to the boy and girl at Upton Elementary who best exemplify the Upton Family's dedication to the community by helping others throughout their years here.

We have pictures of the Upton founders and one of their beautiful houses remains. We do not have records of their thoughts, but another pioneer, Laura Ingalls Wilder, in a letter written to mark her 80th birthday in February, 1947, expresses well the timelessness of the virtues of good citizenship.

"The Little House books are stories of long ago. The way we live and your schools are much different now, so many changes have made living and learning easier. But the real things haven't changed. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures and to be cheerful and have courage when things go wrong."
