A Taste of History:

Daniel Boone’s Corn

Mr. Arthur Taylor Shares Stories of His Boonesboro Ancestors

Students Enjoy a Taste of History

Mr. Arthur Taylor, Upton resident, raises white corn given to his Mattingly ancestors by Daniel Boone when they were neighbors at Fort Boonesboro over two hundred years ago.  Mr. Taylor grinds the heirloom corn in the fall and spring to insure a steady supply of corn meal using a 100-year-old grinder.   A pulley now attached to his tractor, but originally powered by a steam engine, activates the burrstones that crush the corn.  Ms. Theresa’s husband video-taped the grinding process, which was shown to students on WETV. Mr. Taylor   brought a bag of his historical cornmeal for Upton students.  Ms. Theresa turned it into cornbread cakes so the entire student body could have a taste of history, eating cornbread made from Daniel Boone’s corn.

Visit these sites to learn more about Daniel's birthplace, Boone ancestors and descendants, his role in settling Kentucky, and Fort Boonesborough.  You can even take a virtual tour of the Wilderness Trail!

Don't forget to sing the The Riddle Song, popular with Kentucky settlers coming through the Cumberland Gap at this time, and the theme playing on this web page.  Lyrics can be found at Taylor's Traditional Tunebook http://www.contemplator.com/tunebook/amermidi/riddle.htm

And did you know that Daniel Boone inspired Daniel Beard to organize the Boy Pioneers, Sons of Daniel Boone, in 1905, two years before the Boy Scouts began in England?  World Book Encyclopedia states that he based the American Boy Scout badges on pioneer and American Indian cultures rather than the Indian and African traditions used in the British Boy Scouts.
