Storyteller Colleen Sutherland Plays Music

Mrs. Colleen Sutherland, a native of Wisconsin, stopped by Upton & Western recently to tell stories and play music for the children.   Everyone enjoyed her performance.  She was in Kentucky for the Corn Island Storytelling Festival and stayed with the Ferguson Family in Sonora.

Ingrid Nelson

Ms. Nelson shares Xavier

Ms. Ingrid Nelson, author and storyteller from Boston, Kentucky, recently came to visit us. She shared her newest book, Xavier, which tells the story of a brother and sister who learn how to make the earth more beautiful and healthier by not littering. A magical elf named Xavier shows them what pollution can do to the environment and inspires them to action.

All students listened intently and really took the lesson of the book to heart. Mrs. Doty's Class is sponsoring a year long Recycling Project. Many students were motivated to participate by listening to Ms. Nelson's story.

Mary

Vera

Buffy

Students enjoyed author David Sargent's stories about his pet dogs Mary, Vera, and Buffy. But they liked meeting the adorable dachshunds and the fluffy white pomeranian even more than the tales! The puppies did tricks, which the children loved. Mr. Sargent and his animal helpers inspired the students to write stories about people and things in their own life, like Mr. Sargent and other child authors, whose books have been published by Ozark Publishing, Inc., have done.

Mother Goose

We've had Mother Goose from Rock City stop by to share Nursery Rhymes that illustrate the importance of developing good character traits like honesty, responsibility and punctuality to succeed in school and in life.
