HI, there,
I've received your
letter and I thank you for your story. We are also an elementary school, but
from Slovenia, that is a small new country (independant from 1991), before we
were in the same size one of the republics of former Yugoslavia. You can read
about our country at
(http://www.matkurja.com/eng/)
We are quite
active in internet projects and we colaborate with different schools all over
the world. We would like to invite you to write an article about your school
and place to our

for us.
We are looking
forward to your next letter.

Dear New Friends,
Here are our web site addresses to show you pictures of our two
schools, the teachers & staffs, students, and technology projects about
some of the topics we have been researching the past three years. UPTON http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/Upton/default.html
and WESTERN http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/western/default.html. Our schools are located in Hardin County,
Kentucky, which are about 50-60 miles south & west of Louisville, which is
located beside the Ohio River. Our
Music Teacher and librarian go to both our schools and help us do things
together even though we are located about 25 miles apart. Upton has about 135 students plus pre-school
and is located in the town of Upton.
Western has about 110 plus pre-school & is in the middle of a field.
Eastview is the closest town, about four miles away.
The highlights for this year's program
include emphasis on Reading using the Four-Block Model, an increase in the
number of arts and humanities events to which the students will be exposed,
increased time with art and music teachers, and visits to famous museums on the
Internet. Through the school's television program, WETV, students have
interviewed many career personnel in an effort to emphasize the school-to-work
program. A science lab within the school has been set up and a .5 Special
Education unit will be part of the school's configuration.
We are most proud of our Heifer Project http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/upton/HeiferProject.html
collaboration. We made a book of our favorite web sites and
raised enough money to send five live heifers to hungry families in Rwanda
Africa. When the heifers have
offspring, the families will pass on the gift to another needy family, as will
they, so that many people will be helped to have more food and resources for
education, medicine, & better housing.
We hosted a live call-in TV program that is being video streamed over
the Internet to encourage other classes and schools to conduct their own Heifer
Project. It is at http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/video/playvid1.html
One of our librarian's best friends in
elementary school was a girl from Lithuania, which looks to be about 800 miles
from your country. We were excited to
learn that the Lipizzaner
horses are raised in the village of Lipica. In what city is your school located? Please answer soon and tell us about your school. We are trying to make another booklet of the
Best Educational Web-sites in the world.
Could you share some of yours with us that have English
translations?

Dear Friends,
We researched your country in the
encyclopedia and learned about the famous Lippizzaner horses! Our
librarian got to see them perform many years ago in Indiana.
Our state of Kentucky is famous for
raising thoroughbred horses around Lexington, about a 100 miles from
here. The first Saturday in May the Kentucky Derby is held at Churchill
Downs in Louisville, about 60 miles north of here. Have you ever heard of
it?
What are your favorite foods? Ours
are chicken nuggets, pizza, spaghetti, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes,
peas, hotdogs, and French fries.
What are your favorite games? We
like to play football, pin ball, basketball, baseball, four square, hockey, Nintendo,
jump rope, jacks, tic-tac-toe, checkers, Sorry, Blue's Clues, and hide and go
seek.
At Western Kindergarten is working on
Basic Skills. They acted out a play of The Big Bad Wolf story. The
First & Second Graders just finished studying the five senses. Our
third graders are learning about Japan. The Fourth Graders are working on
their portfolio pieces for the end of the year testing. Mr. Wood's Fifth
Graders are researching American History.
We got this message and are excited to
share it with your class. Won't these second graders be excited to
receive an e-mail from your school and country 1/2 way around the world!

e-mail project. We are curious to see where in the world our e-mail will
travel via the Internet, between the period of February 1, 2001, May 1, 2001,
(only 3 months). This is not a pen pal project, so we will not
write you
back (unless you request it).We would like your help. If you receive this
message, we ask that you:
1) e-mail back at: kfestian@caro.k12.mi.us
and tell us your
city/state/location so we can plot it on our map
2) Send this letter on to everyone you know so that they can send it
on to everyone they know (and so on) to help us reach even more
people. We're tracking the number of responses we receive by
making a graph in our math classes using the numbers received by state.
With your help, we can make this a very fun and exciting learning

Hello!
We are students from Solkan Elementary School, Slovenia, Europe and
we were very glad, when we received your letter. It was a pleasant surprise for
us that you know about our Lippizzaner horses.
They live in a town called Lipica, which is known by the five
hundred year- old horse training.
We have "problems" with them, because Austrians maintain
that they belong to Austria. But we don't want to lose them, so we will fight
for them.
Anyway, as you already know, we are children from Solkan Elementary
School. This is a quite big, half old and half new building. Here are about 650
students and 60 teachers. In front of the school there is a playground for
football, basketball, athletics. Behind the school, there is a quite big
meadow, and we run there when we have PE and sports. We also have a small
school library anda school canteen. All important performances are in our
school hall, where we have a small gallery, too.
Our small town, Solkan, is a part of an also small country, called
Slovenia. It lies between the Alps and the Adriatic sea. Our population is
about 2 million. We all speak Slovenian language.
Our nature here is really marvellous. We have high mountains (the
highest is Triglav-three heads, 2864 m high and it's our symbol), green
forests, deep caves, nice lakes, and some beautiful waterfalls. We also have a
small piece of coast of the Adriatic Sea. Our sea is beautiful and quite a lot
tourists come to enjoy it. Our capital city is Ljubljana, which is also the
centre of the country.
We have many wine areas, because we are known in the world by good
wine and also by good, traditional food.
Our town, Solkan, is a small town next to the Italian border. Its
symbol is old Solkan stone Bridge above the cleanest river in Europe, the Soča. About 1001 years ago Solkan
was first mentioned in the written sources.
Around Solkan, there are many interesting places. To the north there
is the Soča's valley, with beautiful turquoise
colour of the river
Soča. To the south there is a town Nova Gorica. To the east there is a well
known wine area Vipava valley, with the slow river Vipava. To the west there is
Italy, a nice and sunny country. And to the northwest there is another wine
area, Goriška brda, which is known by big and tasty cherries.
Slovenia is a nice place, and it's not bad to live in it.
You asked us what is our favourite food and our favourite games.
Here are the answers:
-Favourite food is pizza, spaghetti, minestrone all kinds of
sweets...
-Favourite games are football, basketball, volleyball, tennis,
badminton, skiing, kayaking...
I hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Eva Sušnik

Hello all of you
!!!
We are a small
group in smaller country Slovenia. First I will tell you something about our
group. We’re now in grade 7 of Solkan Elementary School. Our favourite foods
are something like sweets, pizzas, hamburgers… We aren’t very complicated
pupils. We’re very good friends, and we like to work on projects. We also like
school, but we like holidays much more. Our school is in west Slovenia. I think
that our school is one of the best schools in our region. Why?
It’s a big white
building surrounded with meadows. In front of the school there is a playground
for basketball, football and other games. There is also a lane for running.
When there is a break time we always go out to the playgrounds, when the
weather is fine of course. Near our school there is also a kindergarten. I was
there too, when I was little. Our school is divided into two parts, the “old
school “ and the “new school”. In the old school there are classes from 1 to 4,
and the new school that is the new part which was built much later. Our school
is quite well equipped with computers. We have a big computer room with 17
computers, a scanner, a video projector and two printers and in our English
classroom there are seven monitors connected to a computer, a printer, an
internet access and a scanner. I think that now you know enough about our
school, and you are
ready to learn
something more about our country.
I mentioned before
that we are in west part of Slovenia. Although our country is among the
smallest in Europe we divide it into four bigger parts. Our, the west one near
the sea, the north one which is near the Alps, the east one very low one and
the south one named Kras - Karst. We have a lot of woods, much grass, nice,
deep and long caves, very nice old cities or better towns and also good food
and delicious drinks. Our greatest poet is France Prešeren, and our anthem is
one of his poems. Our parliament decides about most of things in Slovenia, but
we also have a president Milan Kučan who presents our country in the world. If
you were the tourists in my country I would take you to Lipica. That is a town,
about 40 km away from our town, well known by horses, nice white horses called
Lipicanci. Then I would take you into one or two world known caves, and then we
would go to the coast to see fields of salt and our oldest town Piran. After
that I would take you to the
Alps, that you
would feel the cold air of the mountains. Maybe you would ski there. There are
a lot more interesting things in Slovenia but I will ended our trip here.
If you want to
know more about us, than write us back!

Dear Friends,
Your Bridges Magazine is really
cool! You have been working hard on
it. We especially like the way the
graphics zoom in at the beginning of each school's section.
We were excited to receive your two
letters at once! We enjoyed learning
about your flag and have put it on our web sites. It is neat to learn that both our flags are red, white and blue!
Pizzas, hamburgers, spaghetti and
sweets we also share as favorite foods.
We're good friends, like to work on projects, and just like you like holidays
even more! At Upton our playground is
in front of the school too. At Western we are surrounded by meadows and it is
in the back. This coming year we will
have kindergarten classes for the whole day, instead of half a day.
We have computers and are connected to
the Internet. We enjoy taking
"Magic Carpet Rides" around the world to learn about all kinds of
topics and making reports, databases and charts and graphs to share our
knowledge on the world-wide-web.
We are very interested in learning about
your country & excited to be involved in your Bridges Project. We were excited to learn about your Natural
Bridge in Slovenia. About 100 miles from Hardin County is Natural Bridge State
Resort Park at http://www.4x4now.com/ajjdbnb.htm . It is home to the great natural sandstone arch that stands in the
midst of the Daniel Boone National Forest, near the Red River Gorge Geological
Area south of Lexington, Kentucky. There is a map of Kentucky on the site to
click on to see where it is located.
There is
a bridge at White Mills which is between our two towns (closer to Western than
Upton)that is very beautiful. You can
see it at http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/lynnvale/whitemills/menu.htm
.
A bridge over the Ohio River between
Louisville, Ky. and New Albany, Ind. is the site each spring of Thunder Over
Louisville, http://www.iglou.com/loucom/thunder.shtml , the major Kentucky
Derby Season event that is our nation's largest fireworks display.
This is the official Kentucky Derby
Festival site address http://navigation.helper.realnames.com/framer/1/0/default.asp?realname=Kentucky+Derby+Festival&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ekdf%2Eorg&frameid=1&providerid=0&uid=17482728
So we have bridges and horses in common
too. Also caves. Mammoth Cave see http://www.nps.gov/maca/home.htm , about 40 miles south of Upton, is the most
extensive cave system on earth with over 350 miles of mapped passageways.
We would love to see the Alps in summer
& winter and go skiing. The
Appalachian Mountain chain stretches through Eastern Kentucky. See information
at the Appalachian Trail Conference web site at http://www.atconf.org/hike/index.html . We
followed a married couple and their dog as they hiked the entire Appalachian
Trail last year by reading the journal they placed on the Internet. We would write to them and send the letters
ahead so they would be waiting for them when they arrived at towns along the
trail. They answered our letters and sent pictures from the trail. See http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/Upton/AppalachianTrail.html
.
We are amazed at how many things we
have in common even though we are half way around the world from each other! Hope to hear from
you again soon.
Best Wishes from

Dear Students at Solkan Elementary,
Our class went to the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama last Friday. We saw different kinds of rockets from long ago.
They have kids and adults learning about space in space camps. One week costs $695.00 per person. Kids stay in a Marriott Hotel that is part of the Space Center. They get up at 5:00am in the morning and don't go to bed till 11:00pm. We only visited for one day.
We rode a Space Shuttle ride where the seats moved, and also a Mission to Mars simulator. The G-force pulled your cheeks back and we couldn't lift our hands till it was over.
The IMAX movie was shown in a room with a dome ceiling, which made it look like we were flying right by planets with stars above us. We saw ice caps on Mars that might be able to be melted for growing plants. Venus looked hot with lava pockets we could see through the gases.
We saw where they were building the new space modules for the 17 countries Space Center project. Astronauts from the U. S., Russia, Germany, and many other countries will live in the modules. Three will stay for 90 days and then 3 more will take their place. Some modules will be used for growing plants to see what fruits and vegetables are like grown in outer space.
We learned a civilian paid the Russians $20 million dollars to go up in space.
We discovered how the astronauts take a shower in space. They close themselves in a shower and strap their feet in. Then a gallon of water shoots out. It rises to the top of the shower. They grab handfuls and rub it on their body. Then it floats to the top again.
When they go to the bathroom, they slide
their feet in straps and they hold onto handles. They line themselves up
and sit on the toilet. They push a button and vacuum themselves to the
potty. When they finish, they push a button. It releases them from
the seat, and the liquids are separated from the solids. All the liquids
are recycled and put into the drinking water, which is 99 % pure. It is
much cleaner than what we drink on earth.
We learned a lot about space travel in one day!
One of our classmates lives really close to the bridge we told you about last time. Please write back soon and tell us if you went on a field trip this spring?

Western Elementary

Hi, my dear
friends,
Thanks for your
letter. It was a nice surprise. One of my students write about her normal day
and I
send it to you. I
will publish both in the magazine. When do you finish this school year?
Thanks and have a
nice day.
My day
Hi! I am Eva, a
fourteen-year-old girl from Slovenia. I attend seventh grade of Solkan
Elementary
School. Now I will
describe you my normal day.
Today is Friday; I
got up at 7.15 with Luis Armstrong’s song What a wonderful world, which, I
think, can really
change your day to better way.
At 8 o’clock the
school’s bell rings (every day from Monday to Friday), so at that time I
already
have to be at
school, prepared for my first subject. Today this is chemistry. I don’t like it
very
much, so this is
not my best way to start a day. But anyway, today we had quite a good time,
because we were
all talking about history, our third subject on Friday, because we wrote a test
today. The second subject
is maths, if I described it in few words I would say; a lot of hard work
for brains (and
for hands, because we have to write many exercises)!!
And than, finally,
we have history. (The test even wasn’t so hard. When we later talked about it,
everybody said
they thought it would be more difficult.)
Fourth and fifth
lesson is housekeeping. Today we learned how to write a plan for a house. It
was
quite exiting,
because I think an architect is a very interesting profession. Our last subject
is
craft. The
teachers today graded us, and than we watched a film about how to make a wine
cask.
After school I
also have to go to Music school, where I play the guitar. Today we first had a
class
about music
history, where we wrote a test over the whole year. I had a guitar class after
that. I
finally wanted to
go home after it, because I was very tired after the whole week work, but it
started to rain. I
remembered this morning song, smile, and thought to myself; 'what a wonderful
world…'

Dear Joan,
The new school year is now in full swing and so we
want to write you a few lines. First let us express our compassion for the
terrorists attacks and give you our hope that all will end well for all of us.
We were shocked. How are you and your kids?
Write us, please to give us some news about the school
and activities this year. Our project Bridges was awarded top 100 among more
than 1000 submitted projects and part of it are also you and your school.
Thanks.
Give regards to all, we are looking forward to your
next letter.
Best wishes and nice days at school.

Subject: Hello
It is so wonderful to hear from
you. Our computer system has been down
across the state for several weeks & we
have really missed it. We
just got
back on
yesterday. We are all enjoying the
beautiful fall leaves & praying
for & trying
to think of ways to increase peace throughout the world.
Congratulations on your award!
We are overjoyed at being able to be
part of
Bridges! Have you seen our new home
page? Our theme this year is
"Our
Classroom is the World". You were the
first to help us make our dream
come true
of having friends around the world through technology!
What
is the name of the contest that chose Bridges one of the top one
hundred
from 1,000 projects? We want to
publicize it on our web page too!
Besides
getting to participate in Bridges, we are getting to tag along on the
European
Kids project (see our homepage)that was a finalist in Rome, Italy
and
Stockholm Sweden, which is really thrilling for our small rural schools.
Our
STLP (Student Technology Leadership Program) Teams raised over
$200.00 at
the Kentucky State Fair & are going to sell our web site books on
Make a
Difference Day to raise even more money for Heifer Project. We are
looking
forward to a visitor from Rwanda, Africa, who is coming to thank us
for
sending 5 pregnant heifers to needy families there last year. Would
your
school consider raising money for animals for hungry children around
the world
through Heifer Project International?
The web site for HPI is

We
send BRIDGES & RAINBOWS of LOVE and BEST WISHES to everyone in your
school and
city. Please write again soon and tell
us what you are doing?

HI,
I'm happy to hear from you this school year again. We too
are happy about our magazine Bridges to gain the 100 top award. You can find
the information of the event here:
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/awards_eschola/sub_area.cfm?sa=553
You also helped us to be among them, thank you. We
found new friend in Japan too and they will publish their articles soon. So our
family is becoming larger and larger and the distances slowly disappear, don't
they.
I went through your renewed homepage. Congratulations!
It is a lot there and I liked our Polka music :).
I will discuss your proposal about gathering money
here and let you know our decision later.
We also send
BRIDGES & RAINBOWS of LOVE and BEST WISHES to everyone in your
school and city. Write again soon, please as we want
to publish your information in our magazine?
Have nice days

- November newsletter
You are in our Cultural Diversity Newsletter again!
Last night there was a piece on TV about Slovenia. It was so neat to see video of your capital
and Lake Bled. A piece was devoted to the Lipizan horses. They also showed a
museum of decorated bee hive boxes.
They were beautiful. Your
country is so prosperous and happy!
Hope you are having a great year.
Love, Your friends in Hardin County, Kentucky

Dear friends,
What a nice surprise! Thanks for the
information and the copy of the letter. I've published both in
our magazine. Now it is even richer and more
interesting as we can see that there are no borders
for us and that distance means nothing in
the virtual worlds, agree?
Have a nice day
