Mrs. Stith’s New York cousin, Mrs. Judy Arthur, was recognized for her
HPI contribution in honor of their Kentucky pioneer ancestors. Heartland Video changed Riga’s European

The
American School In Madrid, Spain

American School of Madrid
STLP Team members & students
at Upton & Western were excited to receive an e-mail from a class
at The American School in Madrid, Spain eager to join our Heifer Project. They
made a CD of Christmas Carols and sold them to raise money for HPI. They have informed us they earned $1,000 for their

The
mission of the Captain Planet
Foundation is to facilitate and support hands-on environmental projects for
children and young adults 6-18. Its objective is to encourage innovative
programs that empower children to work individually and collectively to solve
environmental problems in their neighborhoods and communities. Grants range
from $250 to $2,500.00. STLP Team
Members have applied for a Captain Planet Foundation Grant to send more flocks
of chickens to hungry families through Heifer Project International.

Beth Jensen's Second Grade Class in Melrose, Illinois has
contacted us about joining in a Heifer Project to battle world hunger. We are excited to communicate with them
about ways to fund HPI farm animals and training for hungry families across the
globe.

Working on the
Grant
STLP Team members at Upton & Western
applied for a grant for an HPI gift from the Benjamin Fund, whose objective is
“to fight hatred and bigotry in Hardin County, in the state of
Kentucky, in the United States and even beyond.” They are hoping to expand last year's successful project by doubling the 250 flocks of chickens sent by HPI to families in Afghanistan.
Governor's Volunteer Service Award

Upton & Western 2001-2002 STLP Teams Recognized
by Governor
Upton & Western 2001-2002 STLP Team
members received Certificates of Appreciation from Governor Paul Patton for
their outstanding volunteer service in the Commonwealth of Kentucky by raising
funds to send four goats and 255 flocks of chickens to needy families in 2002
through Heifer Project International.

Upton
STLP Team members shared information about their schools’ involvement with
Heifer Project International during the We Are All
Different KTLN activity at Elizabethtown
Community College on Dec. 13th.
This 4th video-conference in
the HCTV Diversity Awareness Project concentrated on the
theme
of service, and illustrated different ways to serve others. Vine Grove physician, Dr. Tim
Law,
spoke about his health clinic for the Amish community, while the STLP members
related
how
their classmates had learned about hunger in the world, and had managed to help
citizens of
Third
World nations through Heifer Project International acquire farm animals &
training in their
care,
providing them nutrition & extra income for shelter, clothing, medicine and
education.
Civil
War Research

Illustrating Morgan’s
Christmas Raid
for a KTLN Video-conference
Mrs.
Rigg’s & Ms. Cooper’s classes worked hard on an Illustrated Timeline of
John Hunt
Morgan’s Christmas Raid through Hardin County to
share with students around the
commonwealth in a KTLN video-conference at
Elizabethtown Community College Oct. 25th.
They were the first classes in the state to interact
with staff from the Kentucky History Museum,
sharing Civil War stories from different areas of
Kentucky.
Besides the
Timeline, a representative from the Ky. Military museum shared Civil War era
weapons and drilling procedures. A young girl acted out an eyewitness diary
of events during 4
years of the Civil War in Hopkinsville.

Civil War Re-enactors Visit

As a culminating activity to the
students' study of John Hunt Morgan's Christmas Raid
through
Hardin County in 1862-63, Mr. Mike Beumel and fellow re-enactors from the
Orphan Brigade set up camp
in the Upton library Nov. 1 & spent the day teaching Upton students
about a soldier's life in Kentucky during the Civil
War.
Because of their research, the Heritage
Council has promised to erect a marker explaining
Morgan's
journey through Upton to destroy bridges along the L & N Railroad in Hardin
County,
Kentucky.

Festival of Trees & Lights

The Festival of Trees & Lights Entry
Upton & Western STLP Teams
participated in the 2002 Festival of Trees & Lights held at Louisville
Slugger Field Nov. 22nd thru the 24th. They decorated a tree with packages, candy
canes, and farm animal beany babies to represent their gifts of 265 farm
animals through Heifer Project International.
Their tree and many others, in addition to wreaths and stockings of all
sizes, were for sale in the corridors of Slugger Field. Their tree sold for $90.00. All sales will benefit Kosair Children’s
Hospital programs. Last year the
proceeds funded the Baby Buggy transport vehicle and the Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit.
Farm Animal Orders Benefit Kosair
Programs

STLP Members Deliver Farm Animal Orders
Upton
& Western students fell in love with the toy farm animals from the Kosair
Children’s
Hospital Gift Shop used to decorate the Christmas
tree, so the STLP Teams took $125.00 worth
of orders for them, which raised more money for hospital programs.
