Poetry

Greenspace, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, was established in 1974 to promote, develop and maintain the Greenbelt, which is more than 13 miles of trails and parks in Hardin County, Ky., around Freeman Lake, Buffalo Lake, Fisherman's Lake and along the streams that flow to and from them. Their objective is to preserve streams and surrounding areas for recreational, ecological, educational, historic and aesthetic values.

Greenspace sponsors both a Photo and a Poetry Contest to promote awareness, appreciation and stewardship of local streams and streamsides for students and adults.

Here are the poems students have entered in this year's competition. Michael Riggs in Grade 5 and Taylor Rasel in Grade 2 have won school awards of $20.00 and $10.00, for their poems titled "Down at the Creek" and "A Walk".

By Grandma's House on Bacon Creek

The stream has ice on the ledges,

A deer stands up on the ledges,

He sees raccoon paw prints,

He walks to the water and then comes back.

By Dalton

The Stream

The stream is cold,

The stream is green,

It sounds like a shwo,

Some time I just dream,

I love the stream.

A Walk

I take a walk in the creek,

A butterfly came by and kissed my cheek,

The water makes my feet feel cold,

I want to do that when I get old.

Taylor

The Stream

The stream can hold,

Fish of real gold,

So lovely and green,

Some moss by the stream.

A deer comes by,

To drink by the side.

A bobcat sighs

Though it is quite wide.

A snake's home

Is shaped like a dome.

So save the stream

Or you will not fulfill our dream.

A Stream So Clean

When you seem to go down to a stream,

You seem to see a clean stream.

A Stream seems like a dream

When it is clean.

By Jennifer

Down in the Woods There is a Stream

Down in the woods there is a stream.

Every night it is in my dream.

There is a tiny waterfall.

I've never seen one like it, ever at all.

Sometimes you might see a little frog,

Sitting on a very long log.

You can sit in the shadows of the trees,

And listen to the buzzing bees.

You can see the animal tracks,

Where they went to the water and then came back.

Sometimes you can hear the chirping birds.

They sing songs like you never heard.

Down in the woods there is a stream,

And like I said, it's in my dreams.

By Laressa

Birds

Birds, birds, flying so high,

Oh so high in the sky.

Birds, birds, flying so high

You can touch the sky.

Sitting by the stream with my mom and me,

Singing, chirping, with a song in my head.

By Matt

The Frog

I saw a stream, then I dreamed

I kissed a frog and I screamed.

The frog was green and had a white stripe.

The next day I had a wart on my mouth.

Now I know not to dream about a frog.

By Nancy

The Stream is Like Silver

The stream is behind my barn.

At night the stream is like silver in the moon.

I saw a fish jump out of the water

Gold as a piece of gold and silver put together.

I made a wish and it came true.

By Justin

Streams and Dreams

When I see streams

I dream.

My dreams

Always seem

Like streams.

By Maegan

The Fish in the Creek

One merry day I was walking down a street

And then I found a creek.

I saw a little fish.

I was playing with the fish.

I was having a picnic.

The Creek looked so pretty.

It looked like you could drink it.

It was the prettiest creek in the land.

By Chris

Butterflies Fly High

Roses are red

Violets are blue

Butterflies fly high

And so do you.

By Joseph

Water

The water looked very clean.

You could almost hear the water ring.

That made the water look like

A beautiful scene.

By Mary

My Poem

Every night when I go to sleep,

That whole night I don't make a peep.

Every night in a dream

I go to the woods and visit a stream.

With wildflowers all around,

It gives it a beautiful gleaming sound.

You can sit on some logs

And listen to the croaking frogs.

A stream can be a peaceful place

Because streams have such a peaceful grace.

The Time I Went Fishing

I went to the stream.

I got a fish.

He was little.

I let him go.

By Dumas

Going Fishing

One day I went to the stream.

I saw a bunch of fish.

I caught one and took it home.

We ate it and we liked it.

By Kyle

Butterfly

Butterfly in the sky,

How beautiful you fly

Up so high in the sky

Cause you're so sly.

You don't need any colorful covers

Cause you're so full of colors.

Down by the stream

Oh, how you gleam;

Just like a little beam of light

I know you're so bright!

Down at the Creek

I went down to the creek,

I looked at the water.

I saw a deer, it got a drink,

And went back up the bank.

It started to eat the good green grass

Up around the creek.

The creek ran like a song.

By Michael

Mirror, Mirror

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall,

You're so clear

You remind me of a stream

Never mean,

Always clean,

Mirror, mirror.

By Jeremy

The Old Creek in the Holler

Whenever I go to my Papaw's farm,

I drive the four-wheeler past the barn.

Down to the creek to wash it off,

I look at the trees, then I cough.

It's spring here on the farm

And my allergies are doing harm.

I get tired so I move on

And go to the pasture to find a fawn.

I couldn't find one, so I drive home.

On the way I find a pinecone.

By Matt

Nature

People's jobs are to keep the creeks clean.

Don't let the creek get green.

Waterfall you fall so beautiful,

You fall so glistening.

We are listening.

The trails are so lean.

They're so clean.

Animals love water,

The same as we do.

Oh, wildflowers, you are so glistening,

You make the streams listen.

Trees, Trees

Trees, trees,

How green your leaves.

Your bark is like a big trapeze.

Your roots

Are like two dancing boots

And your trunk

Is like a big slam dunk.

Big Springs

Big Springs, Big Springs, runs so calm,

When it's rough, it sings like a song.

Keep our springs clean

Or we won't have them long.

By Justin

Down By the Stream

I'm writing this poem down by the stream

For it is quiet and serene.

I love it down here by the stream

For it seems just like a dream

Way down here by the beautiful stream.

I stand by the stream all day

I sit by the stream all night.

I lean over and what do I see,

The stream so clean and bright.

Leaping from pad to pad as it seems

A frog I might have seen.

And that's what I see

When I look in a stream.

By David

Jumping the Bank

I jumped my four-wheeler at the bank

And landed on the plank.

I went back up the bank

And then I got a drink.

I went to jump the bank

But I did not see the plank.

I went down the bank

There was the plank.

I'm glad I found the plank

So I do not have to go back up the bank.

By Travis

Big Springs

Big Springs, Big Springs,

So cold but fun.

Big Springs, Big Springs,

I love how it runs.

By Jason

The Hardin Stream

I live by a stream,

Every night I dream.

One day my mom saw a snake,

She threw the rake.

By Michael

In the Forest

In the Forest there are coons.

It will be spring soon.

Through the forest to the stream

I fall asleep and have a dream.

By LaTessa

Down by the Stream

Down by the stream,

Where it is so clean

Birds fly by.

Are you going to say hi?

You can sit by the trees

And hear the buzzing bees.

Sometimes there are little frogs

Sitting up on the logs.

On top of the hills,

You will find mills.

If you look here

Sometimes there are little deer.

I see a fish

And I make a wish.

By Shawna

My Dream

When I dream

I see my Mamaw's stream.

I see frogs on logs.

When I see a snake,

I get a rake.

I hear the crabs squeaking under the water.

Then I take a sip of water.

The water turns brown

When the frogs jump away.

Then I am all alone.

Then snap,

I am awake.

By Kyle

A Stream Behind My Cousin's House

My cousin's stream

Runs like a dream.

It runs through a fence.

You have to have sense.

By Chris

When I see a stream

I have a dream

That the frogs are twipping

While I'm sweeping.

When I'm twipping,

The frogs are sweeping.

I saw a snake

So I threw a rake.

By Casey

When I See Streams

When I see streams

I start to dream.

By the streams

I see frogs on logs.

There are bees in trees.

By Cassie

The Hardin Streams

When I see streams,

I have dreams.

The trees and the bees

Are over my head.

I see frogs on logs.

When I see fish in running water

I think of floods.

The birds are here.

They are on the deer.

You, Nature, are true to the dew.

Dew shows the hue of the world.

By John

Stream Water

Stream, stream, stream

Where the world is so clean.

The frogs go swimming every day.

Every bird loves to look down in the clean water

Where the fish are swimming in the rain water.

Oh, the fish are swimming in the rain.
