   Challenger Learning Center Groundbreaking Ceremony

When Upton's student representative at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Challenger Learning Center in Radcliff, Kentucky, came back and shared the exciting information about it, our thirst for knowledge about space exploration was whetted.

We were fortunate to schedule a visit with NASA Representative, Dr. Stanley P. Jones, Aerospace education specialist from Langley Research Center in Newport News, Virginia, who travels across the United States to acquaint the educational community, civic organizations, and the general public with NASA's research and development activities.

An opportunity to video teleconference with Dr. Jones was held at the KTLN Distance Learning Classroom at Elizabethtown Community College.

Classes from Owen and Bath Counties, Lexington, Radcliff and Eastview got to interview Dr. Jones about NASA's space program. Everyone enjoyed his knowledgeable and humorous answers to wonderful questions posed by Kentucky elementary and middle school students who may possibly be inspired to become future NASA scientists and engineers.

We are grateful to Hardin County KTLN coordinator, Mrs. Gina Ryan, and ECC Distance Learning director, Mr. Gwyn Sutherland, for their technical assistance in the coordination and production of this program.

Dr. Jones also visited Upton and Western Elementary schools where he acquainted the students with many facets of the mission of NASA. Wonderful space and plane models, posters, samples of astronaut food, space suits and an outer space sleeping bag helped the children understand the space program through humorous explanations and exciting hands-on activities and experiments.
