KTLN Teleconferencing

Kentucky Folklife Festival

TOUCH THE TRADITIONS was the theme for this year's Kentucky Folklife Festival produced by The Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Arts Council. Thousands of Kentucky students attended this festival in person and virtually by video-conferencing with the performers on the KTLN network.

Artists and musicians were scheduled hourly from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 16 and Friday, September 17. Many of these artists finished a live performance at one of the festival stages and then appeared on the KTLN network.

Upton students in Mrs. Riggs and Ms. Cooper's Fourth and Fifth Grade classes traveled to ECC's Distance Learning Room and participated in the WORKING ON THE RIVER videoconference. They watched Lou Web and Roy Little tell about making a living on Kentucky rivers. These men work on the Belle of Louisville. Students e-mailed questions to the men and were excited to receive answers from them during the program.

Western Elementary Fourth and Fifth Graders in Ms. Miller's class attended the EAST MEETS WEST videoconference. Roger Cooper from Lewis County met Steve Rector from Muhlenberg County for a lesson in divergent guitar playing styles. Delighted students also received answers to their e-mailed questions during this telecast.

Western and Upton will be hosting a KTLN opportunity with schools around the state at 10:00 am on October 28th at ECC when Dr. Stanley Jones comes from NASA to share information about our country's space program with both schools.

Students and teachers are very excited about this new "Magic Carpet" way of learning, bringing people together from long distances into the same room through the miracle of technology. Both schools are especially grateful to Mrs. Gina Ryan, Hardin County Schools KTLN coordinator, and Mr. Gwyn Sutherland, ECC KTLN coordinator, for their help in making this event a success.
