Subject: Link Chase

I'm trying to chase up some links from the Laura Ingalls Wilder - Frontier Girl web site.   We originally used 2 servers but some years ago we amalgamated into one.  It seems there are still some links to the old site.

 On your page

 http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/upton/Uptonaward.html

there is a link to Laura's letter which no longer works.

However we do still have that letter on our site which you can link to from

 http://webpages.marshall.edu/~irby1/laura/letter.html

From my correspondence it seems many people are enjoying your page but are disappointed not to find the letter.

 Many Thanks

 Phil.

Subject: Connecting Uptons

Hello again!

Thank you for sending my address to Carol Upton. I intend to reply to her

after this reply to you.

Yes, I read about the reunion! That was fantastic.  I am sure everyone has

appreciated the effort you and your students have put into the web site and

the positive results you have seen from broadcasting the information.

My father and his father grew up in Upton, so I have been there a few times

over the years but only three times in the last twenty-five.

Most of my family on my father's side is buried at the old family cemetery

on the man's farm on Big Springs Road. My father is buried in Bowling Green,

KY.  But his brother and his mother and father are buried at the family

cemetary there in Upton on that farmland. The local people were very nice

about helping us to find it, (some things had changed and I forgot where it

was exactly, I didn't recognize the area any more).

My father attended school there in Upton and was a very good student. So he

would be very proud of the students there and how they are using the new

technology.

Thank you for all your help connecting me with those long lost cousins.

Sincerely,

Martha Lynn Brashear Julian

Subject: G.W. Upton & your web site!

Hello,

I am Martha Lynn Brashear, daughter of Russell Clifford Brashear.

Russell, Earl Shacklette, and Otto were the sons of Lawrence Brashear.

Lawrence was the son of F.N. Brashear and Paralee Upton. Paralee one of the

daughters of George Washington Upton and Elizabeth Flanders.

It was wonderful to find your web site and discover what my Great-great

grandfather looked like! I knew some of the history of the town of Upton

because my father grew up there (and attended the school there also). I was

so impressed that the students worked so hard and did such a fantastic job.

My daughter is 14 years old and is learning HTML and learning how to do web

sites also. She is an honor student, has two Presidential Educational Award

certificates (one from Bill Clinton and the other from George Bush) and is

one of Duke University recognized verbally and mathematically gifted

students when she was in the 7th grade.  Education is very important to her

(must be a family trait passed on from G.W.).  She was very interested in

the graphics and historical content of your site also. She is quite the

artist too.

Keep up the good work! Our schools here don't collect the box tops for

education but I am going to start saving them now to send to you.

I would deeply appreciate any additional family history information you

might have, copies of pictures, anything!  My father passed away almost 10

years ago and he tried to fill me in on all the family history but I still

have some gaps.  My grandparents and almost everyone else related to me on

my father's side for generations back are buried in the Old Upton Family

Cemetary there on Big Springs Road. I would like to get all the people

buried there plotted and listed so it could be available for genealogical

researchers. My daughter has a digital camera and I would like to also

document the tombstones before they become unreadable or are all tumbled

over. That is my plan anyway when I get the time.

I enjoyed visiting your site, and my brother did too.

Thanks again,

Martha Lynn Brashear Julian.

We have now finished with our fundraising project. With the sale of 190 CDs

we now have $1000 to donate to the Heifer Project. Can you inform me as to

how we actually do this? Is there any way for us to know specifically where

our money is going or do we have any input on where it goes? I would like to

do a special unit with my students on the region of the world and/or type of

animal where the money will go.

Another question--can the donation be made in euros or must we exchange it

for US dollars?

I will be sending the CD you requested. Please send me your mailing address.

Thank you for your support. It was fun to be able to tell people that we

already had a buyer in the US. When we get back to school following the

holidays, I will have some of my students report on our fundraising efforts

to the students at your school. Happy New Year.

I was delighted to find all the information about your Heifer Project while

searching the web. I am a children’s and young adult librarian at the

Summit Public Library in Summit, New Jersey. Every summer we do a summer reading

program. In the past they have had themes about everything from bugs to

zoos. I wanted to do something different this year. I have been aware of Heifer for several years because my church has been involved. When I received one of Heifer's publications recently, I had the light bulb experience that we should do a Heifer

project for summer reading. My kids, usually over 500 of them, read over 5000 hours

during the summer and I thought if I could get some local sponsors (banks,

corporations, individual foundations) to contribute a dollar for every hour

read, we could give an ark. Not only would we do a wonderful thing, but I would have a theme about Heifer and animals which would be fun to do. Now my question - You did this in a public school system, was there ever any problem about the religious basis

of Heifer being any sort of conflict of church./state? I don't know if I am

getting into a difficult situation with some of the public. I would be

interested in hearing about your experience. That you have done it, says to

me that you can, and I may need some support when I go to the director

about this. I find it encouraging that you displayed the project at the Kentucky Department of Education booth and that the governor gave you an award.

I appreciate your taking the time to consider this.  I would greatly

appreciate any input you can give me. Thank you very much.

Dear Joan,

Thank you for the pictures. What a beautiful award you received from

the Governor!   Thank you also for the $100 gift for Afghanistan.  The

chickens that we are providing there are providing greatly needed eggs and

meat to Afghan refugees on the Pakistan border.  They are also helpful to

the families that are now able to move back to their homes in

Afghanistan.   I cannot tell you where the goats went from you gift this

fall.  They were designated for the purchase of goats but we do not keep

track of where each contribution actually goes.  If the money is designated

for  use in a particular project, then it does go there.

I am still very hopeful that Dr. K from Rwanda will be able to visit

here this next year.  Our program department is still trying to arrange for

his visit,  but it will depend on conditions existing in the country as to

whether or not he is able to come here.  He is VERY anxious to come and

visit your students and personally thank them for the support they have

given to Rwanda projects.  I will keep you informed.  Thank you again for

all the work you are doing with the children of Hardin Co. schools.

Thanks for writing. I guess that any of us who labor over this technology stuff are happy to hear good words from others who are interested in using technology for learning.

Your "Research Projects" page is WONDERFUL. What a great collection of resources for any teacher to use.

I have scarfed up some of the writing and put it in the world site in a little different format so your kids can have an opportunity to see their work with a slightly different look. I do have a set of CDs that literally has thousands of great pictures. One problem.....once I get going the package locks up my computer... as you know NO FUN.

Our students collected picture books and Oxford English Picture Dictionaries

to send to missionary key pals in Burundi, Africa, so they could teach

English to children and adults there. See bottom of web page at

http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/upton/Africa.html  They also purchased a Quick

Cam camera for their school and sent a contribution to UNICEF for the Kosovo

Refugees last year. This year our two schools raised money and secured a

grant through Heifer Project International to send five live cows to Rwanda,

Africa so poor families will have milk to drink and sell for extra income to

afford more clothes, education, medicine and better housing.  See

HI, there,

I've received your letter and I thank you for your story. We are also an elementary school, but from Slovenia, that is a small new country (independant from 1991), before we were in the same size one of the republics of former Yugoslavia. You can read about our country at (http://www.matkurja.com/eng/)

We are quite active in internet projects and we colaborate with different schools all over the world. We would like to invite you to write an article about your school and place to our electronic magazine Bridges (http://www2.arnes.si/~bridges/) it would be very interesting for us.

We are looking forward to your next letter.

Starshine participants,

My name is Rick Cannon, Deputy Director at the Aerospace Development Center

in Jacksonville, Alabama, USA.  I am the one receiving your finished

mirrors, processing them and mailing them to Hill Air Force Base.

First, I would like to thank you for participating in the Starshine Project,

an exciting educational project developed by Professor Gil Moore.  I hope

the experience has been, and continue to be rewarding for you and your

students.  Seeing the international cooperation is inspiring and wonderful!

Secondly, I would like to apologize to those of you who did not get your

mirror polishing kit on a timely basis, or did not receive all your

supplies.  That was entirely my fault.  I hope it was not too much of an

inconvenience.

Finally, I have a request.  Our staff bookkeeper, Angelia Cunningham, had

surgery November 7 and was expected to stay in the hospital for about 3

days.  Here it is 4 weeks later and due to some complications, Angelia is

still in the hospital!  Angelia has been a key force behind Starshine 2.

She ordered Starshine supplies, cut grit paper, cut polishing pads, filled

syringes with diamond compound paste, filled eyedropper bottles, picked up

the videos, made hundreds of copies of the instructions, and packaged about

85% of the mirror polishing kits.  A major part of Angelia's job in recent

months has been to get the Starshine kits to you.

What I would like you to do, if possible, is to have your class make a

get-well card and mail it to her here at the Aerospace Development Center.

That would certainly help speed her recovery.  Our mailing address is

Aerospace Development Center, 700 Pelham Rd. N., Jacksonville, AL, 36265,

attn: Angelia.

Again, thank you for being involved in Starshine 2.  Stay tuned for

Starshine 3!

Sincerely,

Rick

J. Stith,

This is to acknowledge your requests for kits to be sent to two schools:

Western Elementary School and Upton Elementary School.  Here is the "welcome":

Welcome to Starshine 2.  We plan to ship your school's mirror grinding and

polishing kit to you in a couple of weeks.  You'll need to ship your polished

mirror back to us by the end of November; otherwise, it won't fly on the

Space Shuttle STS-108 mission.  While you're waiting for the kit, please read

through the grinding and polishing instructions on our official Starshine web

site at http://www.azinet.com/starshine.

When you're on the home page, scroll down to the entry called "How to Grind

and Polish Starshine Mirrors" and click on it.  Then click on each of the

small "thumbnail" images in the instructions to view large colored

photographs of each step in the process.

Also, please read through the other sections of the web site, so you'll know

what the project is all about.  Then it's up to you to keep yourself informed

on the project's status by checking the web site from time to time.  We don't

have the time or the staff to send out individual messages every time we have

news to report.  However, please be sure to let us know of any changes in

your email address, just in case we do need to contact you directly about

your application.

Once again, welcome to Project Starshine.  Based on past experience, your

students will have a lot of fun with this real-life space experiment.

I have added new Vermont links to my website that you can use with your

Dear STLP Teams,

Thank you for your e-mail and the wonderful information about the participation of students from Upton and Western Elementary schools in supporting HPI! I looked at the web site yesterday and it is really fantastic! I told some of our other staff about it and they have found it to be exciting also.

Regarding you request to know how the funds from the schools will be used, if the money was sent in as a part of the matching gift program, it will be used to help fund a new project in Rwanda (Africa). The need there is for dairy cows and more than 500 milk cows will be distributed to families in that country over the next few years. There is a real lack of protein in the diets of people in that country (particularly the children) and milk from these cows will be a big help.

Regarding your request that I might come and speak to your group, I have scheduled a volunteer workshop in Lexington, KY for Saturday, Nov. 18. If that is close to you, I might be able to come a little early and speak to your group on Friday of that week. The other possibility would be one of our field staff people located in Kentucky working with projects there who might be able to come. Steve Muntz (our field program director) lives in Mt Sterling, KY. We also have volunteers who might be able to come talk to your students.

I hope that you will pass on to the students, how pleased I am that they have chosen to support Heifer Project in this way. I hope that they will learn from this activity that even small amounts of money can help a poor and hungry family and that their gifts DO make a big difference in the lives of those who receive animals and training through HPI. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you and again, many thanks for your participation and interest in our program!

We are also not very far from lake Ontario. We wanted to know where you got the live stock to give to needy families? It sounds like a neat thing to be doing.

We planted trees in a conservation area near us. We are helping the environment in the Niagara escarpment area. I hope you saw our I Care garden on our web site (the pictures will be updated soon - it really doesn't snow here all the time!!)

As for the conference, one of its strengths was student projects. The kids provide more than solid evidence that technology can support the curriculum; they bring an energy and excitement that is infectious! I talked with students at all levels about their projects - both the content and how they managed the multitude of tasks necessary to complete it. I was impressed by their level of understanding and ability to effectively communicate that understanding.

And, how fortunate they are to have educators such as yourself to help accomplish so much! You are a true inspiration! I received my award on Friday (our mail is VERY slow right now!), thank you so much! But truthfully, I didn't do much. My students are happy to have been involved, also, and we look forward to checking out all the great web sites in your book. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help you!

As for the video, I'm still trying to get something together. Many months ago, I sent the video and letter explaining what we wanted to do to two of my girls' school. They finally responded. They said their English curriculum (sp?) is very full right now, and they don't have time to embark on such a project. But, that maybe the English Club could do it. The oldest girl starts sixth grade in April, and she will be able to join the club then. So, I'll try it from that end, come their new school year.

Again, thanks so much for the award. And, thank you for the birthday wishes! Have a great spring break!

You folks at Upton are the greatest!! No award could have topped that ! You really have a School to be proud of and it is because of the Principal and Teachers who are dedicated to their job. It reminds me of the kind of School I went to, where the Principal and Teachers were also very dedicated, as a matter of fact we just honored our Principal in June on his 100th Birthday. He was a very special person and everyone still loves him for what he did for the children and his School. Actually I think it was more like a family because we were taught many lesson, not just the 3 r's. This is the kind of feeling I get when we visit Upton School also. Book learning is very important, but, the lessons of life are also very important and what young minds are taught now will be remembered in later years.

Let me introduce myself. My Name is Bill Upton. I'm a Captain with the Wellington Police Dept in Wellington, Kansas. Saw your homepage and become very interested in the school name. I was hoping maybe to be able to obtain some history about your school. It is unusual to see the Upton name.

Thank you for any assistance that you may be able to provide.

Dear EXPERT Educator:

As a doctoral student in Curriculum and Instruction at Boise State University, Idaho, I am collecting data for my dissertation entitled "Beneficial Uses of the Internet in K-6 Education Toward the Year 2001: A Delphi Approach." Your State Technology Coordinator or a person identified to me by them, submitted your name as an EXPERT EDUCATOR who is incorporating the Internet in your K-6 classroom learning environment.

In order to establish a population of experts, I need your participation in a Delphi opinion study of what you identify as the most beneficial uses of the Internet in education over the next three years to increase student learning. Your expertise in using the Internet for classroom instruction will influence this study. I invite you to participate with other educators from around the nation. You will be asked to fill out the attached permission to participate in this study, your response to the research question, a response to the first research question, and a final summary of the results.

I will contact you by e-mail for all three rounds of the study to solicit your opinions. In accord with standard scientific procedure, your identity, and the identity of all other participants, will be kept confidential.

Thank you for your help with this research. It is my hope that you will be anxious to participate with other educators from around the United States.

Please feel free to contact me either by e-mail or by regular mail at 3980 Harbor Point Drive, Meridian, ID 83642, telephone number (208) 884-1323. I look forward to your response soon.

Very sincerely yours,

 Margaret J. Cox

Dear All,

You have made a nomination for the First Annual Friends of STLP Award.

(certificate and recognition)

All awards will be made at 1PM in the Showcase area. If you can not attend, please send a representative. We want you there.

The focus on the award is two fold. One to recognize them also to make other STLP realize that working with community is vital and important for our program. Thank you for your time and support in giving this award.

Here's the scoop: all winners will be asked to take the certificate back to their community and present the award to the indiv, agency, business or corp.

We felt this was a way to get local coverage of all awards. State coverage of this community award will be made at the Awards ceremony.

Art, Music and STLP awards will be given then, too.

Questions? Let me know.

Awards

Hello Joan,

It's good to hear from you again. I think it is just wonderful that the State may come and do a video about the community. I'm sure they will see, as we did, what a wonderful little community you have. We all still listen to the tape of the children singing and talk about our visit there. I can't thank you enough for all the hard work you all did to make our visit there something to remember forever. I think the Pioneer Spirit Awards are a great idea and I wish all the children could have one because they do deserve it. I can truly say we have never met more warm and friendly people than those we met while in Upton. We wish you'all all the best and our prayers are always with you.

                                                                                    God Bless

                                                                                     Carol

I am working with teachers from five school districts on the value of creating presentations. I would very much like to have some examples to show them of teacher and student created work. I would like to stick with powerpoint or hyperstudio presentations. If you have any examples you would be willing to share please send them to me at brenda.nix@coe.murraystate.edu. Also, I would really like web address if any of you are posting student work on the web.

Dear Joan,

I know the project means a lot to you'all and I do hope you win a spot at least, but to all of us you are all winners already.

We are still trying to put a tape together for you and will send it when it is finished. Please do let us know the outcome of the judging.

The shirts and the history arrived so please thank Mrs. Powell for sending them and a special thanks to you for all that you have done.

When one comes to Upton there is a Norman Rockwell feeling there and that is very special !

Love,

Carol

Subject: Class letters

Dear Joan,

We are back in Burundi and just received notice that Shelly Cooper's 3rd grade class has letters for us. Since there is still no mail service from the US to Burundi, they can be sent to the following address in Nairobi:

David Brandon

PO Box 48390

Nairobi

KENYA

We will get them sometime around Dec.1. That is a long delay for kids, so if there are a few more urgent questions we can field, it should be done by e-mail.

Things are quieter here now, as fighting has centered in Congo. WE are fine, though gasoline is rationed to 20 gallons a month.

Enjoy your classes and kids. They are a treasure.

David

Hello, I am an educator in Eastern Utah and I found your page while searching some of my genealogy. I am looking for a cemetery in Hardin County and was wondering if you knew where it might be. It is called the McCandless Cemetery. I need to find someone who will go and look for some names there for me. Any help you can give sure would be appreciated.

I teach remedial reading at our elementary school grade K-3. We have about 600 students. We are about an hour and a half from Wyoming and the same from Colorado. We are in the middle of Dinosaur Country! Lots of fossils and bones of dinosaurs. The kids love it!

Thank you for your help!

I just read your profile on Upton, Kentucky and you did a wonderful job! I had been searching for some information on Upton and that was just what I needed.

My husband and I, his brother and his wife were there last year for "UPTON DAYS" and we plan on coming again this year ( the 3rd weekend in September ?) We met some very wonderful and friendly people while we were there and hope to see them all again.

My husband's G.G. Grandfather was Joseph Upton who had the nephew George Washington Upton. Now that we have a little more knowledge of his history it will be even more interesting.

Thank you for putting this on the net and keep up the good work!
