We Are ALL Different

Video 2, Intolerance

Assessment Tools

Objective:

          A. Students who watch this video should be able to recognize intolerance both in the attitudes of others and in themselves.

        B.  Students should be able to think of ways to combat intolerance in themselves and in the world around them.

Situation:  Every day people cross our paths that seem inconvenient or irritating for one reason or another.  Often, the only reason is that they tend to get in our way or lessen our sense of being in control.  When we react in anger or irritation, we are showing intolerant behavior.

Example:  During many periods in history, one class of people or another has been singled out for persecution.  The Jewish people have historically been persecuted more than any other single group.  Since they are both an ethnic group and a religion, they exemplify two kinds of intolerance.  While many reasons have been suggested for this ill treatment, the main reason seems to have been their distinctness.  Because many of them have been highly successful in business and the arts, they have been resented by those less successful.  When convenient, they have been deported, killed, and their property stolen.  It is very clear that intolerance can lead to gross injustice if not checked.

Main Question:  What kind of intolerance do we exhibit every day and what should we do about it?
