Our Responsibilities as
Citizens

America was designed to be a haven
to the oppressed and persecuted.

Unfortunately even from the beginning some people were left out of the rights of citizenship.

Some, like African Americans were
brought here against their will and
forced to work as slaves.

Others, like Native Americans were
already here, but their rights and
claims were disregarded.

What is citizenship?

To be a citizen is to belong.  It includes rights and responsibilities.

Some people were born as U.S. citizens, but others had to go through a process called naturalization.

Many people have worked hard to become citizens.  It is not to be taken for granted.

Some of our greatest contributions
have come from people who came
to us from other lands.

Here in Kentucky, many people show good citizenship by volunteering and helping in their community.
There is a way for all people, young and old to show their love for their state and their country.
