America
was designed to be a haven
to the oppressed and persecuted. |
Unfortunately
even from the beginning some people were left out of the rights of
citizenship. |
Some,
like African Americans were
brought here against their will and
forced to work as slaves. |
Others,
like Native Americans were
already here, but their rights and
claims were disregarded. |
What
is citizenship? |
To
be a citizen is to belong. It includes rights and responsibilities. |
Some
people were born as U.S. citizens, but others had to go through a process
called naturalization. |
Many
people have worked hard to become citizens. It is not to be taken
for granted. |
Some
of our greatest contributions
have come from people who came
to us from other lands. |
Here
in Kentucky, many people show good citizenship by volunteering and helping
in their community. |
There
is a way for all people, young and old to show their love for their state
and their country. |
