History of Rineyville School

In 1908 the present Rineyville School site served 1-5 in one room and grades 6,7, and 8 in another. Some students had to walk up to 3 miles to school each day. The road was so muddy at times, you could sink up to your knees. So wood planks were lined up for students to walk on.

Some students went on to high school in Vine Grove or Elizabethtown. The students were able to ride the train to Vine Grove. Others dropped out after 8th grade. However, the 1924 and 1928 additional rooms were built to have a four-year high school.

Ballgames were a big part of student activities. Many recess periods were spent playing ball games with plank and stick bats and string wrapped balls.

In 1928 the principal, Cecil Harper, suggested the school have a basketball team. The students built basketball goals and backboards and began practicing on an outdoor court. Both girls and boys played.

Sports continued to be interesting part of the community and the teams gained many loyal fans. The community donated time and money to build a small gym in 1931.

There were no official school colors the first two years of organized sports. The high school students decided to vote on an emblem and colors for the school. The students were choosing between blue and red. After the votes were tallied, red was chosen as the school color and a red devil as the school emblem. The students argued the school needed a fighting spirit, and nothing would be more so than a Red Devil.

In 1934 the old building was destroyed and a new brick building with several rooms was built. In the mid-50's more rooms and a new gym were added. In 1962 Rineyville became an elementary school only with the consolidation of Hardin County high schools. In the early 70's a new lunchroom was built and the old one was converted into a community building. The fighting spirit of the community remained. The community has continued to enjoy the ballpark holding softball and baseball leagues for the young and old. Rineyville Elementary School and ballpark are the center of many community activities.
