K-1 Writing Centers:

RESPONSE FOR GRADE ONE WRITING CENTER:

Earlier, Emily had asked us for ideas for creating

a Writing Center for Grade One. Here are some of

your responses:

TABATHA has some fun ideas for a writing center:

"One of the favorite writing center ideas in my

kindergarten classroom is the Post Office. The

kids are provided with all types of paper, postcards,

note cards, etc. and given the opportunity to write to

each other (and to me). This center is placed near the

word wall so that students can easily write each others

names and have a spelling reference. I have a "mailbox"

for the incoming letters. This gives me a chance to see

how the children are writing before the message gets to

its owner. The kids love it! "

PAULETTE adds:

"If you haven't read it yet there is a book out called

'Word Matters' by Gay Sue Pinelli. I'm not sure of the

spelling of the last name? It has excellent information

and producibles in the back of the book."

TARA gives us her ideas, and adds a tip for

getting parent volunteers to help:

"I really think the key to this, like most things in

education is good modeling. When we did writers

workshop we started by writing class books and

going through the process together. This might

take 2 or 3 times to get the idea across. Then let

the children start working independently on stories.

It does take a major time committment from you

and any aids you might have for the editing process,

but usually the children will be getting to that at

different times. You might also ask for parent

volunteers to help with this. "

Boowa and Kwala-- This site is for kids who want to play

interactive games / activities, read a great illustrated story

and listen to some great music and songs with Boowa and Kwala.

SCHOOL READINESS:

http://ecrp.uiuc.edu/v1n2/edwards.html

Early learning and school readiness:is this a family responsibility or should government intervene in child preparedness? This article by Diane Edwards examines these questions in light of past government efforts, social trends and cultural comparisons. Some statistics may surprise you, such as free preschool services in France starting at 3 years old, with preschool educators having masters degrees in ECE. Or how about Belgium, where all 4 year olds attend school, as do 95% of 3 year olds? Read more comparisons and conclusions in this high quality research.
