Kindergarten Prep

Ways to Help Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten:

  1. Help him write his first name (and last name if he accomplishes writing his first name) using only a capital letter at the beginning, and lowercase letters for the rest.
  2. Teach her information about herself: first and last name, age, birthday, address, and phone number.  If you do not have a home phone, teach her a number that she would always be able to get a hold of you.
  3. Teach him to take care of basic needs on his own (tie his shoes, use the restroom, how and when to use tissues, etc). Also teach him to tell an adult when he needs help or when something is wrong.
  4. Teach her the teacher’s name.
  5. Teach him to follow two step directions.
  6. Teach her to take turns and share.
  7. Teach him to say the alphabet.
  8. Teach her to count to 20.
  9. Teach him to use scissors and glue.
  10. Sing or recite nursery rhymes with her.
  11. Read often with her; point out the front of the book, back of the book, and point to the words as you read.  Read to her, and let her pretend to read to you.
  12. Begin to identify the letters in his name and the alphabet.
  13. Let her count objects out to you.
  14. Teach him that school is a fun place to be and that you are happy to send him.
