ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

North Hardin High School encourages good attendance.  Due to various circumstances, students may
not be able to attend.  Valid excuses are defined in board policy 09.123 as:

1.      Illness that is verified by a doctor or medical agency;

2.      Orders of the court - this applies to summonses and subpoenas;

3.      Death or severe illness in the immediate family verified by a written
statement;

4.      Religious holidays and practices;

5.      Students sent home for lice – one (1) day per instance will be excused with any additional days missed beyond this to be considered unexcused; and

6.      One day for the military deployment of a parent/guardian and one day when a parent/guardian returns from military deployment;

7.      School activities or circumstances if approved by the Principal or his/her designee, including trips qualifying as education enhancement opportunities.

Parent notes for medical-related absences will be accepted for up to six (6) absences – excused for only one (1) day per note.  Doctor's notes must be originals - copies WILL NOT be accepted.

The principal or designee shall determine the validity of each excuse presented.

Any excuse must be presented within five (5) days after the student returns to school.  If not presented in that time, the absence will remain unexcused.  It is the student's responsibility to provide documentation to the appropriate school  administrator in a timely manner.

Beginning with the 2006-07 school year, attendance for all students in the state will be based on the actual percentage of time the student is absent from school.

In the past, reports for attendance show students as tardy, half-day absent, or all-day absent.  Now, attendance reports will show students as tardy or the actual percent of the school day the student was absent.

A student will be considered tardy if they miss up to 60 minutes of the day by arriving late, leaving early, or a combination of the two.  If a student misses more than 60 minutes of the school day, then the entire amount of time will be counted as absent and recorded as a percentage missed of the day.  Reports will show a “T” for tardy if it falls within the 60 minutes or as a percentage of the day missed.

The Truancy Statutes have not changed since last year – classifying six (6) unexcused absences as habitually truant.  For Hardin County School’s purpose of calculating habitual truancy, a cumulative figure will be used.  For example, missing 30% of one day unexcused and 70% of another day unexcused, would equal one (1) full day unexcused absence.

In order to be eligible to receive class credit(s), a student shall not be absent six (6) regularly scheduled class periods per class per semester without a valid excuse while maintaining a passing grade.  Any additional invalid absence(s) may be made up at a rate of one (1) hour make-up for each hour missed.  Absences may be made up by serving detention from 3:45-4:45 pm or during Saturday School from 8:30 am-1:30 pm.

Failure to comply with the attendance policy will result in the loss of class credit(s).

When a student has been absent three (3) times per year in any class period, a courtesy letter will be mailed home to the parent/guardian.  When a student has been absent six (6) times in a class period, notification will be sent to the parent/guardian for possible truancy action.  It will be the parent/guardian's and student's responsibility to monitor additional absences.

At the end of each quarter, attendance will be monitored.  Any student who has exceeded six (6) invalid absences will have his/her school privileges (e.g. driving privileges, extracurricular activities, field trips, etc.) suspended until his/her make-up time is completed.

 Once a student under 21 years of age is absent or tardy (for attendance) six (6) or more days without valid excuse, the student's name shall be forwarded to the
(Hardin County Schools) Division of Student Services as a habitual truant for a
possible court action.  Furthermore, a school hearing shall be conducted
concerning the student's attendance record.
