H:  Homework and Class work

All teachers will send home a student packet every week with homework for the coming week, information items, progress report(s) when applicable, and the student work from the previous week.

Homework will be assigned for the improvement of learning and to reinforce class instruction. Meadow View Elementary strongly supports the philosophy that homework should be meaningful for the student, should be clear and specific and should be of an amount that can be completed in a reasonable amount of time.

It is common practice at Meadow View Elementary School that homework be assigned to students in Primary for one to three hours a week and in 4th and 5th grades three to five hours a week. Reading is an integral part of each team's assigned homework and will be required homework every night. Students are responsible for completing homework and class work in accordance with the teacher’s instructions.

Head Lice

  Our guidelines are based upon the fact that lice nits (eggs) left in the hair can hatch and rein fest a student or other students, even after chemical treatment (Nix, RID, or Kwell).  The purpose of this guideline is to prevent the spread of head lice and to reduce absenteeism due to head lice in our school. Any Meadow View student found to have live head lice will have an adult called and will be sent home.  If no one can be reached, the child will be sent home at the usual time with a letter and instructions for lice treatment. The student must be brought back to school by an adult and rechecked before being allowed to return to school. The child may return to school without an adult if they have a note from a health professional stating the child is free of lice.

M.  Medical Appointments

Students who have appointments to receive physical exams beyond the thirty days grace period may attend school until the date of the appointment – if they present proof in the form of an appointment card.  This is a ONE-TIME exception.

Medicine

Medicine prescribed by a doctor is the only medicine that can be dispensed at Meadow View Elementary.  The parent or guardian must fill out an authorization form for the medicine to be given at school.  Medicine should not be transported to and from school by the student.

P.  Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

 The Meadow View Parent Teacher Organization is a very integral part of our school program.   The PTO offers opportunity for parents, teachers, and the community to work together for the success of our students.  We initiate fundraisers to help with the cost of instructional expenses, awards ceremonies, and special programs.

PE: Physical Education

 It is important that your child wear appropriate tennis shoes for gym class. Shoes that leave black scuffmarks are not acceptable.   Children will need a written excuse for not participating in physical activities.

Each student will have P.E. once a week.  Your Home Room Teacher will let you know the days.

Phone calls for students

Students will NOT be called to the phone. We will be glad to take a message for the student.  Students can use the phone to make a call, on a limited basis.  We ask that you make all your necessary arrangements with your child before school, so phone messages can be held to a minimum.  Transportation arrangements, pictures, special classroom activities, and field trip information need to be taken care of before or after school.

Pictures

Individual and group pictures will be taken at various times during the school year.

Private Transportation

AM Drop Off - Students that are privately transported will be welcomed at  7:10 a.m.  Student supervision will not be available until then.  If you are dropping off your child in the morning, please enter the circle so that the passenger side of your car is next to the sidewalk, drive to the end of the circle, and let your child out. This will allow your child to exit the car on the sidewalk and will allow several cars in the circle and will prevent a traffic jam.

Any students being dropped off after 7:30 a.m.  State law requires that an adult must sign the student in.

Dismissal Guidelines - If you are picking your child up in the afternoon, you need not arrive before 2:05. You will need to go to the cafeteria to sign your child out. This procedure may be revised as the school year continues. Under no circumstances will teachers dismiss a student from school or into any person's custody without the direct approval and knowledge of the building principal/office personnel.  A written note must be brought in or sent to the office for your student:  there will be NO phone calls accepted.  If you have not sent a note requesting your student to be picked up, please do so before 2:00 p.m. so your child can be picked up in the gym at 2:15.  This is for the safety and protection of our students.

 We do not want any student’s safety placed in jeopardy by compromising this safety procedure.

(Photo ID will be required EVERY TIME.)

No child will be pulled from a bus in the afternoon once they are on the bus.

Any student arriving or departing school premises a different way than assigned at the beginning of school year must have a note signed by the principal. ALL STUDENTS LEAVING DURING THE COURSE OF THE DAY OR COMING IN LATE MUST BE SIGNED IN/OUT BY AN ADULT IN THE OFFICE.

T.  Teacher Qualifications

The federal education law put in place by President Bush called, "No Child Left Behind", requires that all parents in Title I schools be notified and given the opportunity to request information about the professional qualifications of the classroom teacher instructing their child.  If you are interested in this information, you may send your request to the building principal who will provide a response, or you may access the information through www.kyepsb.net under Teacher Certification Inquiry.

The principal shall have the authority to permit or deny any individual, or group of individuals, the right to go through the building or to remain on the school grounds.

Volunteer Information

 If you are planning to volunteer in any capacity at Meadow View Elementary, you must fill out a School Volunteer Youth Leader (every year the approval is from March to March).

Request form and return it to the school office.  It is the state requirement to have a criminal background check on each person who is working with or accompanying a child within or outside of our school (field trips, plays, programs etc.).   The background checks take 4-6 weeks to return to Central office, so please take this into consideration when wanting to volunteer the approval is from March to March.  If you know you want to work with students, attend field trips, or manage small groups of students please fill out the form as soon as possible so the paper work can begin.  There will be no exceptions to this policy.  If your name does not appear on the approved volunteer list, located in the front office, you will not be able to accompany, or work with students other than your own child.  We hope you understand the need to protect our children from any danger while attending school activities.

W.  Withdrawing from School

Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy

Attendance KRS 159.010 states that the parent or guardian is responsible for keeping his/her child in regular school attendance. Truancy policy KRS 159-150 states “any child who has been absent from school without valid excuse for three days or more or tardy on three days or more is a truant. Any child who has been reported as a truant two (2) or more times is considered a habitual truant. Once a student under eighteen (18) years of age is absent and/or tardy six (6) days or more without valid excuse, this student's name will be forwarded to the Director of Student Services as a habitual truant." In view of the KRS 159.01 0 and KRS 159.150 requirements, the Hardin County Board of Education has approved the following attendance regulations for all elementary schools.

A.  A student who is absent must, upon return to school, bring a note signed by his/her parent or guardian stating the reason for the absence. A student who is absent because of illness and goes to the doctor shall present the doctor's statement. Valid excuses for absences will include:

  1.  Illness that is verified by a doctor or medical agency (parent note will be accepted for up to six (6) absences – excused for only one (1) day per note);
  2. Orders of the court-this applies to summons and subpoenas;
  3. Death or severe illness in the immediate family verified by a written statement.  Immediate family shall mean father, mother, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, blood-related aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, or anyone living under the same household roof with the student.
  4. Religious holidays and practices;
  5. If a student is sent home for lice, one (1) day per instance will be excused with any additional days missed beyond this to be considered unexcused;
  6. Circumstances if approved by the principal or his/her designee, including trips qualifying as educational enhancement opportunities.

Students shall be granted an excused absence for up to ten (10) school days to pursue an educational enhancement opportunity determined by the Principal to be significant educational value.  You must obtain an educational enhancement form from the office at least one week in advance for principal approval.

B. All other absences will be considered unexcused absences.

C. When a student has been absent without valid excuse for three (3) days, notification will be sent to the parent/guardian. After a student has been absent six (6) times without a valid excuse, the parent/guardian will be notified that any additional absences without a valid excuse will be

forwarded to the Director of Student Services.

D.  A student will be considered tardy if they miss up to 60 minutes of the day by arriving late, leaving early, or a combination of the two.  If a student misses more that 60 minutes of the school day, then the entire amount of time will be counted as absent and recorded as a percentage missed of the day.  For Hardin County School’s calculating habitual truancy, we will use a cumulative figure.  For example, missing 30% of one day unexcused and 70% of another day unexcused, would equal one (1) full day unexcused absence.

E. A parent/guardian must come into the school to sign in for a student who is tardy and give a reason for the tardiness.

F. A parent/guardian or approved person must come into the school to sign out a student before he/she can be taken from school.

Photo ID will be required every time a child is signed out.
