The Reading Development class will be implementing the Literacy First Process to accelerate and strengthen student progress in the areas of reading strategies, comprehension skills, spelling, vocabulary development, and fluency.  The Literacy First Intensive Reading Process allows us to identify the students’ reading strengths and weaknesses, plan the most appropriate curriculum and learning strategies, monitor to ensure the students are becoming successful readers, and reteach as most appropriate.

Supplies: Students will be provided with a binder to keep in the classroom.  Students need to bring paper and a writing instrument to class each day.  They may also bring books from home for independent reading.

Students will use a variety of print and electronic texts in class, including In a Word (with workbook), Great Strides, Focus on Reading, Readers’ Theatre scripts, newspapers and other authentic texts.

Grading Policy: Students’ progress will be monitored throughout the academic year by standardized Literacy First tests as well as informal fluency assessments and teacher observations.  Grades in the course will be determined according to the following areas:

·         Class Participation: 30%

·         Tests, Quizzes, Projects: 25%

·         Classwork: 45% (including 15% for In a Word workbook)
