GEOMETRY

SYLLABUS

Kimberly R. Cardin

Winter 2008

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Geometry introduces students to concepts related to two-and-three dimensional figures and their properties.  We will study problem solving using geometric figures, congruence and similarity, inductive and deductive reasoning, logic, geometric constructions and measurements, Pythagorean Theorem and right triangle trigonometry.  As a part of the study the student will learn to read for information, communicate algebraic reasoning, use computer/technology within the context of daily lessons and compute using a variety of algorithms.

The students will participate in skill building exercises, written process pieces, hands-on discovery activities, informational reading, open response questioning, accelerated math and projects.

The class will prepare the student to investigate and solve problems, predict and understand data, and utilize and access materials to implement further study and greater understanding of Geometry.

TEXTBOOK

GEOMETRY; Prentice Hall Mathematics 2003.

PREREQUISITES

Algebra I part I and part II.  A student is more successful if they have completed Algebra II, although it is not required.

 MATERIAL REQUIRED

1.      Geometry Textbook and Workbook.

2.      Pencil, notebook paper, and graph paper.

2.      Binder to keep all notes and handouts from class.  All students are expected to keep a notebook in class; all notes, examples and class openers will need to be kept on a daily basis in the notebook. Order using a date as basis.

3.      Scientific Calculator.  (Needed Daily)

4.      Protractor and Compass will be used on occasion.  These will be supplied in class.

GRADE DETERMINANTS

1.       Tests

2.       Quizzes

3.       Class Work

4.       Homework Assignments

5.       Writing Assignments or Projects

6.       Accelerated Math

Test grades will be counted as 70% of your 9-weeks grade.

Class work, quizzes and accelerated math will account for 15% of your 9-week grade.

Homework will account for 15% of your 9-weeks grade.

Notebook Test and a 9-week project will be counted in the test category, and should help your grade.

A notebook must be kept on a daily basis.  Students will be expected to copy all notes, examples and openers from the overhead.  These notes must be kept in a notebook using a date as the method of ordering.  A notebook test will be given midway through the first 9-weeks, and then at the end of the 9-weeks thereafter.  The total notebook grade for the 9-week period will count 50- points.  A project or writing each 9-weeks will also be assigned, and will count as a 50-point grade.  The notebook and project grade will be counted in the test category, and are intended to help your grade.  Stay organized.

Homework will be counted as 15% of your 9-weeks grade.  Homework will be assigned almost nightly.  No late homework will be accepted.  Homework will be collected daily; sometimes it will be graded, other times an effort grade will be taken.  (To be successful in any math class, it is imperative that you complete your homework each night.)

Class work will be count 15% of your 9-week grade.  Class work, quizzes, accelerated math, and a daily grade will be included in your class work grade

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

1.      Arrive on time with prepared lessons and all needed materials.  No late homework will be accepted.  Be in your seat at the end of the tardy bell.

2.      Any behavior that keeps me from teaching, or others from learning is unacceptable.  Respect is mandatory in the classroom at all times.

3.       Make up all work (homework, quizzes and tests) missed due to absence within the required time.  This is your responsibility.  Failure to make up tests within the allowed time period will result in your taking the tests at the instructor’s convenience.  Assignments are always listed on the bulletin board.  Grade sheets will be given after each test.

4.      The classroom is for instructional purposes only.  Students will be required to work the full 90-minutes of class.  Class begins when the bell rings, please be in your seat with materials ready and begin working on the opening assignment.

5.      If cell phones are used in class, they will be taken and turned into the office.  No first warnings!!

6.      No food or drinks allowed in class, with the exception of water bottles, with caps.  All other food or drink needs to be kept in book-bag.
