Class Introduction: Please review your Honors English III syllabus. You won’t get another copy of this, but it’s a good idea to review the expectations and requirements. Also, make sure to get the two books that you are assigned: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Vocabulary PowerPlus, Book 3.

Tuesday, February 23

1.      Vocabulary Lesson 6: Complete word squares for the first set of five words on the list, which is on the first page of the lesson. Follow the word square format attached.

2.      Today, we are doing a practice English ACT. Please get a copy of this from me and complete this on your own time. Time yourself at 45 minutes.

2.      ACT Review. To make up for this assignment, get notes from a classmate on 5 tips for each section of the ACT. You will have 20 total tips. ACT tomorrow. Get some good rest and eat breakfast in the morning! We have a homeroom at the end of 5th block today for instructions on where to go, what to bring, etc. tomorrow. If you need to know where to go, you can e-mail me today (I have the list) or see me or a counselor in the morning. I will be in room 425.

Write down the answers. Then use the information to write a SUMMARY, PARAPHRASING, and DIRECT QUOTE. Use Write for College to determine when each is appropriate.

Then, write these direct quotes on your own paper. You should have six areas highlighted on the article and six sentences or lists on your own paper.

2.      Find three editorials in the newspaper (any newspaper). List the title of the editorial, the writer, and the following for each: the SITUATION that created a need for the editorial, the PURPOSE of the editorial, the AUDIENCE of the editorial, and the ONE SENTENCE in the editorial that serves as a thesis statement for the entire piece.

3.      Brainstorm ideas for your own editorial. Consider topics on the school, community, state, and national levels. Turn in the brainstorming sheet. It can be any type of graphic organizer that you choose.

4.      Using your chosen topic, complete the attached organizer. Use the spaces in the boxes to write.
