The German classes are taught using a natural acquisition approach called Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Story Telling. This class introduces 3 to 12 words or phrases per day and integrates them into listening, speaking and writing activities. After the introductory listening phase, speaking, reading and writing becomes an important and integral part of the learning. As the levels progress more emphasis is placed on each skill needed to perfect communication in German. Cultural elements of the Germanic speaking countries are also incorporated.
Grading:
40% of the total grade includes tests, quizzes, dictations, portfolio assignments (3 test grades total each quarter), open response writing, and projects.
30% of the total grade is composed of daily language practice through oral and aural participation in German.
20% of the total grade includes all other aspects including bell work, homework, written work; reading and related tasks, grammar and culture.
10% of the total grade will be the notebook grade. The notebook will be graded according to the rubric 2 times a quarter.
Absences and Late Work: Since this class is based on daily oral, aural and written participation, this daily learning experience can not be made up. In the case of an unavoidable absence, the student should contact their partner to obtain missed notes and vocabulary and then contact the instructor before 8:15 AM or after school to schedule make up quizzes or tests. Bell work can not be made up as well as some in class assignments but if not excessive these will not lower the grade. You are responsible for your learning and assignments and late work will only be accepted according to the Hardin County Schools policy after an absence. Tests and quizzes are not announced and therefore the student will be expected to take such after returning from an absence. Otherwise the school policy will be followed. Cheating on tests, quizzes and homework will not be tolerated and a zero to all involved will be given. Plagiarism on portfolio assignments will follow the school policy.
