Spanish I Syllabus

Edwin Bonet-Ruiz

Fall 2009

Text: ¡En español! And Cuaderno “Más práctica” (both published by McDugall Little in 2000)

Course description:

Students in Spanish I learn basics for conversation and written communication in the target language.  Mastery of these Spanish I basics is a necessary foundation for Spanish II, thus students must pass I as a prerequisite for II.  Students will speak, listen, read and write in Spanish.  Students will speak and write using complete sentences.  Vocabulary is learned as a basis for communication in whole expressions.  In other words, students will usually learn only vocabulary they will need to communicate in each lesson.  I occasionally supplement the vocabulary with extra words (like slang terms, for example) that are relevant.  Students leave Spanish I using the target language to get and give information and to communicate needs or wishes.

Course outline:

Students will use the above mentioned text, both in Spanish I and II – the first half in Sp. I and the second in Sp. II.  They will explore basic grammar, pronunciation and spelling concepts in Spanish.  They usually start out by using new information in writing first and later in paired or group speaking activities.  New information is incorporated with what students have already mastered, so active participation in class and consistent homework production are essential to passing the class.  It is very difficult to catch up when students fall behind.

Topics covered:

Students learn to speak, read and write in the present tense in Spanish I.  They learn ways to talking about the future as well, but they mainly stay in the present.  They will also learn about and discuss several Spanish-speaking cultures as well as several pre-Columbian civilizations.  The text gives them cultural information about cities in the U.S. where Spanish is widely spoken.  It also introduces them to daily life in Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Materials students need to provide:

You will need to bring writing utensils, paper, text and a 3-ring binder to class.  1” to 2” binders seem to work best, as they will be keeping a Spanish notebook.  Students will be reprimanded, for not being prepare for class!!!!!!

Course requirements:

Students will participate actively in the class by being ready to answer when called upon.  Students will write some activities down on paper during class (these are participation pages) others will be graded as the teacher walks around the room to check each group’s progress.  Homework is assigned often and students are expected to come to class with it already prepared.  Failure to do so will result on a 10-point deduction for every day is late!  Turn it in on time!

Grading:

Grades are weighted - Chapter/Unit Test usually count 25%, quizzes 20%, classwork 15%, class participation 15%, homework 15%.  The final at the end of the tri-mester counts 10% of the students 12-week grade should they need to take it.

Students who are absent MUST make up work missed in class and homework.  Absentee work must be turned in within the number of school days the student missed.  If a student misses one day, he o she gets one day upon returning to make up the work missed.  I do not ask students for make-up – it is their responsibility to get the assignments missed and turn them in to me without being badgered.  I do not accept late makeup work, participation pages or homework.
