Difference Between Cold and Swine Flu Symptoms

Symptom

Swine Flu

Fever

Fever is rare with a cold

Fever is usually present with the flu in 80% of all flu cases.  A temperature of 1000 or higher for 3 to 4 days is associated with the flu.

Coughing

A hacking, productive (mucus-producing) cough is often present

A non-productive cough is usually present (dry cough)

Aches

Slight body aches and pain

Severe aches and pain are common

Stuffy Nose

Stuffy nose is commonly present and typically resolves within 7-10 days

Stuffy nose is not commonly present

Chills

Chills are uncommon

60% of people with the flu experience chills

Tiredness

Tiredness is fairly mild

Tiredness is moderate to severe

Sneezing

Sneezing is commonly present

Sneezing is not common with flu

Sudden Symptoms

Cold symptoms tend to develop over a few days

Flu has rapid onset within 3-6 hours the flu hits hard

Headache

Fairly uncommon with a cold

Headache occurs in 80% of flu cases

Sore Throat

Commonly present with a cold

Not common with the flu

Chest Discomfort

Mild to moderate with a cold

Chest discomfort often severe with the flu
