Text Box: Hello,

I’m very excited to communicate G.C. Burkhead’s 2009 CATS and No Child Left Behind testing results to you. GCB met 10 out of 10 goals according to No Child Left Behind. 78.84% of the tested students scored Proficient or Distinguished in Reading, and 73.91% of the tested students scored Proficient or Distinguished in Math. These scores were well above the goals that were set for elementary schools in Kentucky. G.C. Burkhead performed well on the 2009 CATS test as well, with a transition index of 97. This compares to a transition index of 95 in 2008. The goals for all Kentucky schools is to get to 100 by 2014-GCB is well on the way to meeting that goal. Our goal at GCB is to continually improve each year no matter what the score. GCB is a great school where students learn each day. This is directly attributable to our students, parents, and staff that work to make this happen!!

The character education word for November is Citizenship. Some suggestions for discussing citizenship with your student:
Encourage your children to be involved in the community through Scouts, 4-H, church youth groups, or charities..
Take your child with you when you vote. Talk to him about the candidates, the offices they aspire to hold, and their positions on key issues.
Participate in community-building activities, such as cleaning up parks and assisting with school activities.
Discuss citizenship with your child and find examples of what good citizens have done for their communities.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 769-5983

Sincerely,

Bryan Lewis

Text Box: Red Ribbon Week

The school and students recognized Red Ribbon Week during the week of October 26-30. Red Ribbon Week is a drug awareness week and encourages kids to lead a drug-free lifestyle.
As parents, you too, can encourage your child to lead a drug-free lifestyle. A life free of alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Talk with your children about the dangers of these substances often, including the lifelong consequences drugs can cause to themselves and those they love.
Keeping open communication with your children can help prevent your child from making an unhealthy choice.

Did you know? Alcohol can now be found in certain energy drinks- as much as 8% alcohol! These are not sold in dry or moist counties but can be found in convenient stores or packaging stores in wet counties. These products can only be purchased by adults, however, the packaging looks to be a regular energy drink. Be careful and read the fine print to make sure it does not contain alcohol.
These drinks are often sitting right next to the energy drinks that contain no alcohol.

Thank you Burkhead PTA and Communicare Regional Prevention Center for sponsoring Red Ribbon Week Activities!
