Regions of Kentucky

Introduction

Kentucky is a beautiful state with numerous breathtaking scenic parks and landmarks. It is divided into six regions that all have unique characteristics and personalities as well as industries, crops, and natural resources. I hope that you will become more familiar with and proud of the state in which we live while researching the region of your choice.

The Task

And you’re off!!! Choose one of the six regions of Kentucky to explore and experience during this Webquest adventure. Answer the questions on the attached page while exploring the sites listed below. You may want to explore the sites first before choosing a region to see which one interests you the most. While you are answering the questions provided for you, be sure to take notes on index notecards on any interesting things that you see that you think would be fascinating to share with your classmates. You will be presenting the information that you find orally to the class. You will also prepare a poster and/or brochure to share with our class and other classes in our school. On your mark, get set, GGOOOOO!!!

The following is a list of Internet resources that I have found for you that will be helpful in completing this Webquest. Feel free to also use your textbook, Kentucky History Workbook, Tourism Brochures, etc. to complete the Webquest. The Bluegrass Region Gives a description of the region, how it got its name, and cities located in the region.

Kentucky_Towns,Cities,_and_Counties Explains how Kentucky got its name and lists several towns, cities, and counties in Kentucky.
State_History_and_Facts Explains Kentucky’s origin and history, lists interesting facts about the state and gives a list and description of the state’s symbols.
Frankfort_The_Capitol Gives a historical synopsis of Frankfort along with a detailed map the allows you to explore any part of the city that you desire.
The_Kentucky_Historical_Society Describes events, publications, and history that students and teachers in Kentucky can get actively involved in.
Kentucky_Counties Shows a physiographic map of Kentucky and gives you the opportunity to type in a location in the state and conduct a search.
Kentucky_Counties_2 Lists every county in Kentucky, the year it was formed, the area, population, density, and seats.

The Process

1.Search the Internet sites below and choose one of the six regions of Kentucky to complete this Webquest.
2.Answer the questions on the Regions of Kentucky Question Sheet (attached page) using the Internet sites to listed below to find the answers.
3.Take notes on index cards while searching the Internet sites on any interesting or fascinating things that you find that you would like to share and present to your classmates.
4.Prepare a poster and/or brochure compiling everything that you have learned about this region. You may use pictures and maps that you have printed from the Internet sites, your own drawings, tourism brochures, your own personal pictures, etc. Be creative, unique, and artistic when completing this part of the Webquest.
5.Prepare an oral presentation for the class in which you will share the information you gathered on the question sheet, your index note cards, and your poster and/or brochure.

Learning Advice

Most importantly have fun and take your time in completing this Webquest!! It is not a race to see who can finish first. I am looking to see that you have thoroughly researched each question about your region and compiled as much information about it that you can. Be sure to print any pictures that you find along that way so that you can use them on your poster and/or brochure. Also make sure that you keep index cards handy to take notes on while you are exploring the Websites. Frequently review the information that you have gathered and practice presenting it to the class orally. I suggest presenting it to some family members at home for practice.

Conclusion

Have you thoroughly enjoyed studying and discovering the regions of Kentucky!?!? Hopefully you are more familiar with the state in which we live and you have grown to appreciate all of its brilliance and wonder even more. You are now an expert on the region that you have explored! Be sure and share all of your knowledge with others so that they might become more familiar with and appreciative of our state too!!
