INTRODUCTION.

We, the trustees of Upton Institute, Hardin county, Ky., wish to announce to the public that we have contracted with Prof. J. A. Howard, late of Gilead Institute, Canmer, Ky., and Miss Stella Keith, of Upton, Ky., to take charge of our school for the school year 1906-1907.

Prof. Howard is a man of considerable experience, his class of county certificates always attesting his ability as a teacher. He now has more pupils teaching the public schools of Hart, Green, and Metcalfe counties than any other teacher. He has been directly connected with the public schools of our country for the past nineteen years, hence we feel that success must crown his efforts here.

Miss Stella Keith is a young lady of our own community and her success as a teacher in the past is sufficient evidence to warrant the selection we have made, and our school is to be congratulated upon securing her services.

UPTON KY.

Upton is a quiet, thriving little town of some four hundred inhabitants, situated in the southern section of Hardin county on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. She has telephone connection with almost every section of the country. She has the very best of moral and christian influences sustaining as she does, two large churches with two regular Sunday Schools. Her business interests show that our merchants and business men generally can supply one with any comfort he may wish. Our citizens are energetic and believe much in education and will give special attention to the wants and needs of their school. The town is small and therefore better suited to her school interests. Our school will not be hindered by the empty pomp and show so plainly seen in larger places.

PRIMARY

We are aware that this department is much neglected, especially in our public schools. It is our intention to make it an attractive feature of the school. It will be under the management of a first-class teacher who will give as much time to recitation as is given in the more advanced departments.

INTERMEDIATE

The work of this department is a thorough preparation for profitable work in higher grades. Reading, composition, grammar and arithmetic receive special attention. A thorough knowledge of these branches is insisted on as indispensable in advancing to higher grades. Formation of correct habits of studying is an end kept constantly in view.

PREPARATORY AND TEACHERS

This course includes all branches required to be taught in the common schools. Pupils can enter at any time and find classes suited to their advancement. The pupil who has thoroughly mastered this course is will qualified to teach any public school in Kentucky. Power of original and individual thought will be carefully cultivated. In teaching the branches of this course the most improved methods are used, so that the pupils not only acquire a knowledge of them but learn the best methods of representing them in the class room.

The work of this course is two fold: First it is to enable the pupil to be better prepared to enter a county examination. It is to assist him in expressing himself that the best results may be gained from his papers; it aids him in raising his grade of certificate that he may obtain a better school.

Second. It teaches brevity, aptness and accuracy. It gives to those expecting to teach a proper idea of presenting subjects to their classes. It shows them how to appear before their classes that they may obtain the best results. In short it is a normal course which prepares for examination and teaches how to teach.

ADVANCED OR SCIENTIFIC

The object of this course is to open up before the minds of the pupils a field for investigation, to classify knowledge, to develop the faculties of the mind, to create a desire for hard mental work and to learn how to apply knowledge correctly.

NUSIC

The department will be under the management of a first-class teacher whose time and energy will be devoted entirely to the advancement and interest of her pupils.

BOARDING

Arrangements have been made with private families to accommodate quite a number of young ladies and young gentlemen at $2.25 per week everything furnished, or at $1.50 from Monday to Friday. The teachers with the trustees will see after the boarding arrangements and use all means necessary to obtain the best board convenient to school building. Board due at the end of each month.

DISCIPLINE

It is aimed to make the discipline of the school such as to develop principles of honor, self reliance and self control. Pupils are treated as ladies and gentlemen until they prove themselves otherwise. Any rule that will advance the interest of the school will be promptly enforced. No pupil who does not submit to the rules and regulations will be permitted to remain in the school. When the discipline of the school fails to correct any habit of idleness or immorality, the parents of such pupils will be promptly notified.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion we wish to say that Upton is noted for the healthfulness of its citizens. The school building is beautifully located on a little elevation in the western part of town.

We wish to ask the citizens of town and community in general to assist us in establishing and maintaining our school. Cooperate with us in giving your patronage and influence and ask others to do the same.

To the public, in general, we wish to say, send your sons and daughters to our school. We will endeavor to make board and tuition as reasonable as possible.

The principal makes a speciality of preparing teachers. Give him a trial. We feel you will never regret the time and money spent. For catalogue and all information address
